`a powersplit device coupled to the transmission device and the second

`electric motor, the power spht device comprising one or more planetarysets;

`an energy management system (MS) configured to:

`enable the first electric motor to operate as a motor to drive the

`vehicle in a first mode of operation whenthe vehicle is cruising; and
`
`enable the first electric motor and second electric motorto

`operate as motors to drive the vehicle in a second mode ofoperation
`
`when the vehicle is accelerating.

`The drive systemof claim 1, wherein the ESS comprisesa first energy

`storage unit and a second energy storage unit.

`the secondelectric motor to operate as a generatorin the first mode of

`a power conversion device coupled to the HSS;

`a first inverter coupled to the power conversion device;

`a first AC motor coupledto the first inverter;

`a second AC motor coupled to the secondinverter;

`a transmission device coupled to the first AC motor:

`a power split device coupledto the transmission device andthe second

`AC motor, the power spht device comprising one or more planetary sets; and

`an energy management system C{MS) configured to selectively:

`enable the first AC motor to operate as a motor to drive the
`
`vehicle when the vehicle is cruising; and
`
`enable the firstAC motor and second AC motor to operate as
`
`motors to drive the vehicle when the vehicle is accelerating.

`8. Theelectric drive system of claim 7, wherein the ESS comprises a first energy
`
`storage unit and a secondenergy storage unit.

`9. The drive systemof claim 8, wherein the first energy storage unit comprises a

`battery and the second energy storage unit comprises an ultra-capacitor.

`10. Theelectric drive system of claim 7, further comprising a pre-charging

`11. The electric drive system of claim 7, wherein the EMSis further configured to

`enable the second AC motorte operate as a generator when the vehicle is

`cruising.

`12.4 drive system for a vehicle, comprising:

`an energy storage system (ESS);
`
`a power conversion device coupled to the ESS;
`
`a first electric motor coupled to the power conversion device;
`
`a secondelectric motor coupled to the power conversion device;
`
`a transmission device coupledto the first electric motor;
`
`a power split device coupled to the transmission device and the second
`
`electric motor, the power split device comprising one or more planetary sets;

`and
`
`an energy management system (EMS) configured to:
`
`enable the first electric motor te operate as a motor to drive the
`
`vehicle in a first mode of operation whenthe vehicle is cruising; and
`
`enable the first electric motor and second electric motor to
`
`operate as motors to drive the vehicle in a third made of operation
`
`when the vehicle is in an uphill mode.

`13. The drive system of claim 12, wherein the ESS comprises a first energy
`
`storage unit and a second energy storage unit.

`between the ESS and the second electric motor.

`16. The drive system of claim 12, further comprising a pre-charging switching

`enable the second electric motor to operate as a generator in the first mode of

`operation when the vehicle is cruising.
