`Description
`IVT 26 mph(42 km/h) with Right-Hand Reverser Control
`IVT 26 mph (42 km/h) with Left-Hand Reverser Control
`IVT 31 mph (50 km/h) with Right-Hand Reverser Control
` IVT 31 mph (50 km/h) with Left-Hand Reverser Control
`
`
`The 31 mph IVT is ideal for material transport applications; the faster transport speeds require some specific
`order requirements. However, control and operation of the IVT is the same, no matter if you select the 25 or
`31 mph version. Read on for further explanation on how to achieve peak operating performance of the IVT.
`
`
`
`
`The revolutionary Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT)
`provides excellent performance in all farming conditions. The
`John Deere IVT is an easy transmission to use, with simple and
`intuitive controls allowing you to move smoothly from 0.03
`mph (50 meters/hr.) up to optional 31 mph (50 km/hr.) and
`any speed in between. Never again is a gear too fast or too
`slow; the IVT provides a seamless range of speeds with no
`gaps. No clutching is required to start or stop the tractor. The
`footbrake with integrated AutoClutch performs like the brake in
`a car; simply depress both brakes and the transmission ratios
`down to a stop from any ground speed. To keep your 8030
`Series Tractor stationary even on inclines, use the John Deere-
`exclusive PowerZero™ feature.
`
`The 8030 Series IVT offers a choice of two control strategies: a
`right-hand reverser control (order codes 1127 or 1167) and a
`left-hand reverser control (order codes 1137 or 1157).
`
`IVT cutaway
`The right-hand reverser control is optional on the 8130-8430
`Wheel Tractors and is base equipment on the 275 PTO hp 8530 Tractor with 26 mph (42 km/h) transport
`speed. The left-hand reverser control is optional on all 8030 Series Wheel Tractors.

`
`The IVT is not available on the 8130 2WD Tractors or 8030 Series Track Tractors.
`
`The space-saving countershaft design allows the IVT to fit into the same space as the 16-speed PowerShift
`Transmission with internal parts sized appropriately for the power of the 8030 Series Tractors. For efficient
`and smooth operation, power is transmitted through the transmission to the final drive with a minimum of
`gear/clutch engagements. The John Deere IVT uses a hydromechanical, power-splitting design where a
`portion of the power is transmitted mechanically and a portion hydrostatically. A hydromechanical
`transmission is more efficient than a purely hydrostatic transmission because gears carry power more
`efficiently than a hydraulic pump and motor. By careful selection of the gearing, the John Deere IVT carries a
`maximum of the power mechanically both at normal field working speeds and at transport speeds, taking
`maximum advantage of the higher mechanical efficiency while providing the control and versatility of a
`hydrostatic. The versatility of speed variability and mechanical performance coupled with electronic control
`makes the John Deere IVT a very economical transmission for a variety of applications.
`
`The IVT has a fully integrated Electronic Management System that allows the engine to communicate 100
`times a second with the transmission. This technology allows unrivalled ease of operation among all
`transmissions, making it ideal for agricultural businesses with flexible labor schemes. This high-efficiency
`design combined with an exclusive control system brings tomorrow's technology home today. Electronic
`communication and interaction between the engine and the transmission allow optimum productivity and
`efficiency at any engine speed. This is achieved because the operating conditions are being constantly
`monitored and relayed to the Electronic Management System, which then automatically determines whether
`the tractor is in a loaded condition or a light- to no-load condition and makes the appropriate adjustments.
`
`The Electronic Management System works with the IVT and engine to maintain the selected travel speed at
`reduced engine rpm when the IVT selector activates the system, resulting in increased efficiency and reduced
`fuel consumption.
`IVT selector
`
`
`The IVT selector has four positive detent
`positions:
`
` Position 0, "Off"
` Position 1, "Automatic Mode"
` Position 2, "Automatic Mode"
` Position 3, "Automatic Mode"

`IVT selector switch
`
`Position 0 "Off" - Used for special and scraper applications:
`When turned off, the Electronic Management System is disabled and the transmission operates as any
`traditional transmission where the operator sets the engine speed and ground speed. The transmission will
`not automatically shift with varying engine load to maintain your selected ground speed. For most
`applications, positions 1, 2, or 3 should be selected to provide maximum productivity and minimize fuel
`consumption.
`
`Scraper applications:
`Place IVT selector in position 0, "Off" when in scraper applications.
`
`If the IVT selector is placed in "Automatic Mode" during scraper applications, as the load increases the
`transmission will ratio down to maintain maximum power (slow the tractor). If tractor ground speed goes
`below 4 mph while the tractors is at maximum power for an extended period of time, damage will occur to
`the drive train.
`
`Position 1 - Primarily for PTO applications:
`Use position 1 when operating PTO-powered implements. In positions 1, 2, or 3, the tractor tries to maintain
`the selected travel speed at reduced engine rpm for reduced fuel consumption and increased efficiency. In
`position 1 and the PTO engaged, the engine rpm can only be reduced minimally in order to maintain proper
`PTO operating speed of 540 or 1000 rpm. When a load is placed on the tractor, the engine will first increase
`power to maintain PTO rpm. Once maximum engine power is reached and additional load is placed on the
`tractor, the IVT transmission will reduce speed enough to keep the engine at maximum power until the load is
`decreased. Then the transmission will increase the speed back up to the speed selected. Once the load is
`reduced further, engine rpm will again drop to reduce fuel consumption. All of this is done automatically
`through the Electronic Management System, maintaining communication between the engine and
`transmission.
`
`Position 2 - For heavy draft and tillage applications or when hydraulic flow is needed:
`Use position 2 when operating heavy tillage equipment. As in position 1, the tractor will try to maintain the
`selected ground speed at reduced engine rpm for improved efficiency and reduced fuel consumption. The
`minimum engine rpm is adjustable in the CommandCenter™ to customize the tractor to the application.
`Since the PTO is no longer involved, the rpm is allowed to go lower than in position 1. As before, when the
`load increases on the tractor, the engine increases power until maximum power is reached; then, if needed,
`the IVT transmission will ratio down (slow the tractor) enough to keep engine power at maximum. Once
`the load decreases the IVT will ratio up (increase speed) back to the selected speed and the engine will
`reduce rpm. All of these operations are performed automatically by the Electronic Management System.
`
`Position 3 - For transport and light tillage applications:
`Use position 3 for light tillage or transport applications. In this position, the engine rpm will reduce lower
`than in positions 1 or 2 to save additional fuel. The tractor is capable of full transport speed at very low
`engine rpm's, as low as 1200 rpm's for 25 mph (40 km/h) transmission and 1700 rpm's for the 31 mph
`(50km/h) transmission. As before, the minimum engine rpm is adjustable in the CommandCenter to allow
`the operator to customize the tractor to the applications.
`
`In the end, the Electronic Management System operates similarly to the traditional gear-up-and-throttle-back
`operation performed manually. However, because the Electronic Management System is continually
`communicating with the engine and transmission and making appropriate adjustments based on inputs
`received from the tractor, it responds quickly and precisely to changing conditions. This allows maximum

`efficiency and productivity from the tractor. Because these changes are done automatically, it reduces the
`reliance on operator experience to make the appropriate manual adjustments. Even the most experienced
`operator will see enhancements to tractor productivity while minimizing fuel consumption in most
`applications.
`
`IVT set points
`
`IVT set points allow an operator to tailor the tractor's engine rpm settings for various applications. The
`medium-low setting will be the preset factory setting, and is highly recommended for most applications to
`maximize tractor performance and minimize fuel consumption.

`anticipation feature allows the IVT to predict a "load" increase on the engine from a particular SCV or hitch
`movement. The system learns this "load" from a SCV or hitch lever movement in the detent position only
`resulting in a decreased engine load (raising the implement). The system then anticipates this "load" with
`movement of that specific lever in the opposite direction (lowering the implement).
`
`This will provide the tractor an engine speed boost before the implement strikes the ground. For example, if
`an operator lifts the implement out of the field, fuel economy mode will kick in to start reducing engine rpm
`as the turn is made. When the load anticipation feature detects the implement being lowered as the result of
`an SCV or hitch movement, an engine speed boost will be commanded prior to the implement striking the
`ground.
`Order code 1127 or 1167: right-hand reverser control
`
`
`With the right-hand reverser, there are three main controls
`used to operate the transmission:
`
` 1. Foot brake with integrated AutoClutch feature
` 2. Set speed adjuster
` 3. Multi-function speed control lever
`
`
`The right-hand reverser control strategy combines the speed
`control lever with the multi-function controls in a single lever
`conveniently located on the CommandARM™ as shown to the
`left. This would be a good choice for most common field
`applications since tractor speed and direction are not constantly
`being adjusted by the operator.

`
`Left-hand speed control lever
`With the left-hand reverser, there are four main controls used to operate the transmission:
` 1. Foot brake with integrated AutoClutch feature
` 2. Set speed adjuster
` 3. Speed control lever with two variable speed bands
` 4. Multi-function left-hand reverser
`
`The left-hand reverser control strategy separates the speed control lever from the multi-function controls as
`shown above. This strategy would be a good choice for operations requiring the right-hand to run multiple
`operations on the CommandARM or applications requiring constant directional changes. A good example would
`be loader work where typically the right hand is busy operating a joystick so the left hand can now control
`tractor direction and PowerZero.
`Foot brake with integrated AutoClutch function
`
`
`The electrohydraulically controlled brakes on IVT-equipped tractors
`Foot brake with integrated AutoClutch
`have an integrated AutoClutch function. At low idle only, the tractor
`Foot brake with integrated AutoClutch
`will stop by depressing only one brake pedal. Pressing both brakes
`simultaneously will stop the tractor from any ground or increased engine speed. This can be done on flat
`ground or steep slopes simply by using the brake pedals; it is not necessary to depress the clutch. It is
`recommended to lock the brake pedals together when operating on roads.
`
`Note: The preferred method of stopping heavy towed loads is to slow the IVT speed lever and lower engine
`rpm first, and then depress both brake pedals.
`Foot throttle
`
`
`Using the optional foot throttle in conjunction with the footbrake
`with integrated AutoClutch is the preferred method of operating
`an IVT-equipped tractor on the road. It is as close to driving a
`car as you can get in a tractor. Using the foot throttle to make
`minor adjustments to tractor speed simplifies operation of the
`tractor. When coming to a stop, let off the foot throttle,
`reducing both engine rpm and speed, then depress both brake

`depress the foot throttle. It doesn't get much easier than that!

`
`Set speed adjuster
`
`
`The set speed adjusting wheel is a rotational wheel located on
`the speed control lever. The wheel is quickly and easily
`adjusted with the thumb and rotates infinitely with no stop or
`start position to allow quick adjustment of the maximum set
`speeds. The set speed adjuster is used to control the
`maximum commanded forward or reverse speed in each speed
`band (speed bands are discussed in more detail below but
`could include F1, F2 in forward, and R1, R2 in reverse
`depending on style of reverser control).
`
`While in motion, the speed lever must be in the speed band for
`which you wish to set the maximum set speed. When
`stationary, all set speeds, both forward and reverse, may be
`adjusted while the speed control lever is in the scroll position
`(scroll position shown at left); however, there is a difference
`between the two control strategies. On tractors equipped with
`right-hand reverser controls, the engine must be running, while
`on tractors with left-hand reverser controls, the engine does
`not have to be running; you only need the key switch on. The
`maximum speed selected in forward and reverse is shown on
`the cornerpost display. Forward set speed 1 can be adjusted to a maximum of 12.5 mph, while set speed 2
`can reach 26 or 31 mph. Also, set speed 2 must always be at least 10 percent faster than set speed 1. For
`reverse, on tractors equipped with right-hand reverser controls, there is only one reverse slot and the
`maximum speed is 12.5 mph. On tractors equipped with left-hand reverser controls, the operator has a

`Left-hand reverser
`Right-hand reverser
`On a right-hand reverser, the multi-function and speed control lever are combined into one lever. On a left-hand
`reverser, they are separate levers.
`
`The speed control lever controls the commanded speed of the tractor. Forward and reverse speeds can be
`programmed into the tractor using the set speed adjuster either prior to moving or while operating the tractor.
`These programmed or set speeds are achieved when the speed control lever is placed at the end of either speed
`band F1, F2, or R on right-hand reverser controls or 1 or 2 on left-hand reverser controls. Ground speed is
`variable from a very slow (creeper) speed of 0.03 mph (50 meters/hr.) at the bottom end of the first forward
`band up to the preset set speed 1 at the top end of the first speed band (position F1 or 1 shown above). The
`commanded speed is then variable from set speed 1 to set speed 2 at the top end of the second variable speed
`band (position F2 or 2 shown above). Speed band 2 always begins where speed band 1 ended. There is never
`a gap or overlap so speed progression is continuous as the speed control lever passes through the transition,
`although the rate of speed change may be different for each speed band. As the operator moves the lever
`within or between speed bands, the Electronic Management System ensures smooth, quick, and powerful
`acceleration or deceleration, regardless of load or ground speed. Commanded speed (determined by the
`position of the speed lever) and ground speed (calculated from tire size and axle rotational speed or radar speed
`if equipped with radar) are displayed on the cornerpost display.
`
`The multi-function portion controls directional, neutral, park, PowerZero and scroll. Refer to the above picture
`for location of these positions.
`
`Park (marked P) - Engages the electrohydraulic park brake. Lever must be in this position to start the
`tractor.
`Neutral (marked N) - Allows the tractor to roll freely.
`Scroll - Tractor will be in PowerZero while in the scroll position. Use scroll position to adjust forward and
`reverse set speeds while stationary. The tractor will default to Park immediately if the operator leaves
`the seat.
`PowerZero - In PowerZero, the transmission is operating but delivering zero speed, so the tractor will hold
`its position regardless of load or incline without using the brakes. This is ideal for loader work or
`operations where the tractor needs to be totally stationary for a short period of time. Lever must be held
`in this position or it will automatically go to the scroll position. As long as the lever is held in the
`PowerZero position, the tractor will not default to park as it does in the scroll position.
`Forward and Reverse Directional Control - On right-hand reverser controls, moving the lever to any
`position within F1, F2, or R slots determines tractor direction. On left-hand reverser controls, the left-
`hand reverser lever must be moved to either the forward or reverse slot for tractor movement and
`direction, independently of the speed control lever position. On either right-hand or left-hand reverser
`controls, the lever can be moved between forward and reverse without stopping to allow smooth, quick
`direction changes.

`IVT vs. PST productivity and efficiency
`
`After discussing the details of the IVT, the question will remain which transmission, IVT or PST, would be
`better suited to a particular operation or application. Some applications requiring creeper speeds (such as
`harvesting sugar beets or potatoes), precise speed control (spraying) or speed matching (grain cart or dump
`wagon alongside a harvester), and other specialized or specific applications are ideally suited to the IVT.
`However, many common tillage applications are not as clearly defined. To assist with this decision-making
`process, a chart has been developed comparing a PowerShift using Automatic PowerShift (APS) to an IVT
`using Automatic Mode (IVT selector set in position 1, 2, or 3). When looking at the ranges given in the chart,
`the lower range of the percentages given should be used if the operator uses APS with their current PST in
`the operation or application. If the operator does not currently use APS, then use the upper range of the
`percentages shown for comparison purposes.
