`
`The grade sensors provide grade information to the
`ECM. The desired grade (setpoint) is established by the
`operator at the start of the cut. See the topic Setpoint
`Adjustment. The ECM will detect deviation from the
`grade setpoint and correct the extension of the
`appropriate front leg in order to attain the grade
`setpoint.
`
`The solenoids of the system are a component of the
`electrical proportional hydraulic valves for extending
`and retracting of each leg (left front, right front and
`rear). The ECM drives the solenoids in order to control
`the extension of each leg. There is a raise solenoid and
`a lower solenoid for each front leg. During automatic
`operating mode, the ECM controls the front solenoids
`automatically. However, the operator can directly or
`indirectly control the front solenoids while the system is
`in manual operating mode or automatic operating
`mode. There is a single raise solenoid and a single
`lower solenoid for simultaneously controlling both rear
`legs. The rear solenoids are not controlled automatically
`by the ECM. The ECM drives the rear solenoids
`according to operator requests only. The front
`solenoids are located on the front hydraulic manifold
`and the rear solenoids are located on the rear manifold.
`
`Introduction
`
`The Caterpillar Grade & Slope Electronic Control
`System electronically controls the extension of each
`front leg in order to attain the desired surface profile.
`Automatic or manual operation of the front legs is
`provided. Manual operation of the rear legs is provided.
`The system can function in the grade/grade control
`method or the grade/slope control method.
`
`The various components of the Grade & Slope
`Electronic Control System are shown in the preceding
`block diagram. A brief description of the major
`components follows.
`
`The Electronic Control Module (ECM) is the central
`control computer of the Grade & Slope System. Grade
`sensors, a slope sensor, switches and controllers
`deliver the necessary information to the ECM. The ECM
`produces the control signals sent to the solenoids for
`elevation of the machine. The ECM also produces the
`display information for the controllers and the grade
`sensors.
`
`The controllers provide information to the operator and
`provide the operator a means of modifying the
`operation of the Grade & Slope System. Each controller
`communicates with the ECM through the CAT data link.
`There can be from one to six controllers installed on
`the Cold Planer. Controllers are usually mounted on the
`left and/or right side of the operator's console. A
`controller can also be mounted in front and/or behind
`the cutter for a ground operator on the left and right
`sides of the machine. The controllers are designed to
`be movable between any of the six locations on the
`machine. The Grade & Slope System must be powered
`down with the on/off switch before disconnecting or
`connecting a controller.
`
`The CAT data link provides a communications platform
`for the Grade & Slope System. This data link is
`separate from other data links on the machine.
`
`The slope sensor provides transverse or cross slope
`information to the ECM. The term slope is used to refer
`to transverse or cross slope. The desired slope
`(setpoint) is established by the operator at the start of
`the cut. See the topic Setpoint Adjustment. The ECM
`will detect deviation from the slope setpoint and correct
`the extension of the appropriate front leg in order to
`attain the slope setpoint. During grade/slope operation,
`the control of one machine side is determined by grade
`while the control of the other machine side is
`determined by slope. The slope sensor is mounted to
`the frame of the machine.
