`
`—TThis is equivalent to a requirement that for Category I and III
`furnaces, the flue loss of the furnace shall not be less than
`1 7 percc nt.
`
`2.8 CONIBUSTION
`
`2.8.1 A furnace shall not produce a concen-
`\\_’tration of carbon monoxide in excess of 0.04 percent
`in an air-free sample of the flue gases when tested
`in an atmosphere having normal oxygen supply.
`
`Method of Test
`
`A furnace shall be equipped with a duct, as specified
`in 2.3.2, the outlet end of which shall be symmetrically
`restricted until the furnace is operating against an external
`static pressure as specified in 2.6.1. Under the conditions
`of holding static pressure constant, the normal temperature
`rise can be allowed to vary slightly.
`
`Burner and primary air adjustments shall be made in
`accordance with 2.5.4.
`
`After adjustment and with all parts of the furnace at
`room temperature, the pilot(s), if provided, shall be placed
`in operation and allowed to operate for a period of 5
`minutes. The main burner(s) shall then be placed in
`operation and the furnace operated for 3 minutes at
`normal inlet test pressure at which time a sample of the
`flue gases shall be secured. Immediately upon seeming the
`sample at normal inlet test pressure, the reduced inlet test
`pressure (see 2.5.1) shall be applied and, following a purge
`period of at least 2 minutes, another sample of the flue
`gases shall be secured.
`
`The gas appliance pressure regulator shall then be
`adjusted to provide an increase in the input rate specified
`by the manufacturer of twelve percent for furnaces for use
`with natural, manufactured and mixed gases or LP gas-air
`mixtures, and nine percent for furnaces for use with
`liquefied petroleum gases. When the regulator outlet
`pressure cannot be readily adjusted to obtain this increase
`in input rate, the regulator may be removed or blocked in
`
`the open position or the inlet test pressure may be
`increased as necessary.
`
`The furnace shall then be allowed to continue in
`operation for 15 minutes after it was initially placed in
`operation, at which time another sample of the flue gas
`shall be secured.
`
`On a furnace provided with a power burner or induced
`draft, an additional combustion sample shall be secured
`with the furnace operating at normal inlet test pressure
`and with the supply voltage reduced to 85 percent of the
`appliance rating plate voltage. This sample shall be
`secured 15 minutes after the furnace has operated at the
`reduced voltage. The input rating may vary from normal
`as a result of the voltage reduction.
`
`Samples shall be secured at a point preceding the inlet
`to the draft hood where uniform samples can be obtained.
`When this method of sampling is not practical, the
`procedure shall be left to the discretion of the testing
`agency. The flue gas sample shall be analyzed for carbon
`dioxide and carbon monoxide.
`
`2.8.2 A furnace for use with natural gas shall
`comply with 2.8.1 when adjusted and operated with
`test Gas A at 4.0 inches water column (995 Pa) inlet
`test pressure.
`
`Method. of Test
`
`This test need not be applied when the manifold
`pressure at the 4.0 inches water column (995 Pa) inlet test
`pressure adjustment is not lower than that specified by the
`manufacturer for natural gas.
`
`With all parts of the furnace at room temperature, the
`furnace shall be placed in operation with test Gas A at
`4.0 inches water column (995 Pa) inlet test pressure. After
`15 minutes of operation, the input rate shall be adjusted
`to the manufacturer’s specified normal input rating and
`the primary air adjustment set to give a good flame. Input
`adjustment shall be made by first opening the auxiliary
`adjustment means, including the gas appliance pressure
`regulator, to the full open position and then increasing
`orifice size. Following adjustment, all gas to the furnace
`shall be turned off and all parts of the furnace allowed to
`cool to room temperature. The pilot burnerts), if provided,
`shall then be placed in operation and allowed to operate
`for a period of5 minutes, at which time the main
`burner(s) shall be placed in operation. The furnace shall be
`operated for 3 minutes, at which time a sample of the flue
`gases shall be secured and analyzed in the manner
`prescribed in 2.8.1.

`

`2.8.3 The combustion characteristics of a
`
`furnace, as indicated by the carbon dioxide content
`in the flue gases, shall not be affected when the
`furnace is operated under the following conditions:
`
`tetrachloride, shall be introduced into the combustion
`chamber in sufficient amount to assure that, if flue gases
`are discharged through the door cracks or other openings,
`their presence shall be revealed by the smoke.
`
`a. Against an external static pressure as
`specified in 2.6.1, or at the maximum static
`pressure specified by the manufacturer,
`whichever is greater, imposed by a
`restriction applied symmetrically at the
`end of the outlet duct, with the control
`chamber panel closed;
`
`b. Same as “a” except with the control
`chamber panel open; and
`
`c. Same as in “a” except with the external
`restrictions removed.
`
`A furnace for outdoor installation need not
`
`comply with “b” above.
`
`This provision shall be deemed met when the
`spread in carbon dioxide content of the flue gas
`samples obtained under the three operating
`conditions does not exceed 0.4 percent.
`
`Method of Test
`
`Tests shall be conducted with the furnace rated and
`
`adjusted as specified in 2.8.1. With the furnace operating
`at normal inlet test pressure against an external static
`pressure as specified in 2.6.1, samples of flue gases shall
`be secured (1) with the control chamber panel in place and
`(2) with the panel open or removed. Under the conditions
`of holding the static pressure constant, normal temperature
`rise may be allowed to vary slightly. A flue gas sample
`shall also be secured with the control chamber panel in
`place and the restriction removed from the end of the duct.
`
`Samples shall be secured not less than 2 minutes nor
`more than 5 minutes apart. The samples shall be analyzed
`for carbon dio>dde content and the three results compared.
`The spread in carbon dioxide content of all three samples
`shall not exceed 0.4 percent.
`
`2.8.4 All flue gases shall be discharged through
`the flue outlet. There shall be no leakage of flue
`gases through door cracks or other openings.
`
`Method of Test
`
`This test shall be conducted simultaneously with
`2.20.5. A fuming or smoking material, such as titanium

`
`2.9 BURNER OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS
`
`During the following tests, the minimum static
`pressures specified in 2.6.1 shall be held constant.
`The normal temperature rise may be allowed to
`vary.
`
`Except for 2.9.6, tests shall be conducted with the
`burners both hot and cold.
`
`2.9.1 Main burner flames shall not flash back
`when turned on and off:
`
`a. At the burner adjustment and inlet test
`pressure specified in 2.5;
`
`b. At 4.0 inches water column (995 Pa) inlet
`test pressure with Gas A as specified in
`2.8.2 when use with natural gas is desired
`[this test need not be applied when the
`manifold pressure at the 4.0 inches water
`column (995 Pa) inlet test pressure
`adjustment is not lower than that specified
`by the manufacturer for natural gas];
`
`c. With the gas valve turned until the gas
`input rate is 1/3 of the normal input rate at
`normal inlet test pressure.
`
`In the event the furnace control system
`shuts off the main burner gas supply
`before the input rate is reduced to 1/3 0L\_.
`normal rate, the test shall be conducted at
`the lowest input rate at which the control
`system will permit ignition. In this event,
`the shutoff point of a control system as
`described in “e” or “f” below shall not
`
`\
`
`exceed 87 percent of the minimum input
`rate;
`
`(1. At 87 percent of the lowest input rating if
`the furnace is equipped with automatic
`step-rate or automatic modulating controls
`which provide for ignition and operation
`at a reduced input rating, if this results in
`an input rating of less than 1/3 the normal
`input rating; and
`
`e. At 87 percent of the lowest input rating if
`the furnace is equipped with automatic
`modulating controls which act to reduce
`the input rating after ignition of the main
