`
`About the Author
`
`Brad Hill spends most of his time with computers and considers them
`living creatures with personalities. For this reason alone, he should be
`treated with caution. Nevertheless, this affinity with digital life forms has led
`him to the far corners of cyberspace.
`
`Brad turned to computers with abandon when MIDI, the digital music
`standard, appeared in the 19805. As a soundtrack specialist, Brad composed
`music for many audio theater projects (including “The Fall of the House of
`Usher" and “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” for National Public Radio);
`industrial and feature films; and television shows. His soundtrack produc-
`tions have garnered five-star reviews in national publications.
`
`Buying his first modem, Brad joined every online service available and
`quickly became addicted to the whole online experience. He didn’t resort to
`taking his meals intravenously in front of the computer, but he spent many
`sleepless nights roaming the alleys and avenues of the budding information
`highway. Soon he was a Sysop (System Operator) for CompuServe, and his
`friends have seen very little of him since.
`
`For a while, Brad pursued music production and writing as parallel occupa~
`tions. Words eventually prevailed over notes, and he glimpsed sunlight for
`the first time in years. He now writes books for beginners about the
`lnternet, online services, multimedia, and music technology. He has never
`written a cookbook and never intends to. He did, however, recently review
`more than 600 CD—ROMs, and somehow survived the experience. Brad
`continues to manage virtual communities on CompuServe and the World
`Wide Web.
`
`Brad enjoys hearing from people and can be reached electronically at his
`Internet e-mail address: b ra d@nj cc . c om.

`Dedication
`
`This book is for my parents, Betty and Russ, with love and admiration. From
`my mother I’ve learned persistence; from my father, self-reliance. They
`continue to be my greatest influences.
`
`Author’s Acknowledgments
`
`I wouldn’t have been involved in this project if it hadn’t been for Mary
`Corder, who encouraged me from our very first conversation.
`
`Mary Goodwin has been unfailingly gracious and helpful in the preparation
`of this second edition, despite delays and unexpected glitches (a fancy way
`of saying author mess-ups) that would daunt a more easily shaken editor. I
`also remain grateful to Pat Seiler, who edited the first edition of this book.
`Her editorial suggestions, many of which remain in this edition, were and are
`invaluable.
`
`I also want to thank Mike Kelly, who got the ball rolling for the second
`edition, and who encouraged me to add a CD—ROM to the book.
`
`Finally, I acknowledge the entire, vast community of souls who inhabit, even
`sporadically, the global Web that is still under construction. They are the
`pioneers of a new frontier.
