`
`STATEMENT OF
`
`CHAIRMAN ANN BROWN
`
`COMMENDATION AWARD TO SAWSTOP
`
`JULY 20, 2001
`
`WE ARE HERE TODAY TO AWARD A
`
`CHAIRMAN’S COMMENDATION TO SAWSTOP, LLC,
`
`OF WILSONVILLE, OREGON.
`
`SAWSTOP HAS DEVELOPED AMAZING NEW
`
`SAFETY TECHNOLOGY TO PREVENT INJURY ON
`
`POWER SAWS.
`
`I FIRST SAW A DEMONSTRATION OF THE
`
`INNOVATION AT OUR PRODUCT SAFETY CIRCLE
`
`CONFERENCE IN OAK BROOK, ILLINOIS, LAST
`
`MONTH.

`
`

`
`I CAN TELL YOU THAT EVERYONE IN THE
`
`ROOM GASPED WHEN THE SAW STOPPED. IN THE
`
`DRAMATIC DEMONSTRATION, THE SAW STOPPED
`
`INSTANTLY WHEN IT CAME INTO CONTACT WITH
`
`A HOTDOG. IN REAL LIFE, THAT WOULD HAVE
`
`BEEN A FINGER -- A FINGER THAT MIGHT
`
`OTHERWISE HAVE BEEN AMPUTATED IF THE SAW
`
`HAD NOT STOPPED.
`
`EACH YEAR THERE ARE ABOUT 30,000 HAND
`
`AND FINGER INJURIES FROM TABLE AND BENCH
`
`SAWS THAT ARE SERIOUS ENOUGH TO BE
`
`TREATED IN U.S. HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOMS.
`
`OF THESE, ABOUT 10% ARE FINGER AND
`
`HAND AMPUTATION S. THI S NUMBER HAS
`
`REMAINED THE SAME SINCE 1995.

`
`

`
`SAWSTOP TECHNOLOGY WAS DEVELOPED TO
`
`PREVENT THOSE SERIOUS INJURIES FROM
`
`OCCURRING.
`
`IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO PROTECT
`
`THOUSANDS OF CONSUMERS WHO USE POWER
`
`SAWS EACH YEAR AND TO BRING THOSE INJURY
`
`NUMB ER S D OWN.
`
`OUR CPSC TECHNICAL EXPERTS HAVE
`
`EXAMINED THIS TECHNOLOGY CAREFULLY.
`
`THEY ARE CONVINCED IT WILL HELP PREVENT
`
`INJURIES.
`
`COMPANIES ARE OFTEN CONSERVATIVE
`
`WHEN IT COMES TO SAFETY INNOVATIONS.
`
`HERE’S ONE THAT REALLY WORKS. LET’S SEE
`
`PEOPLE USE IT.

`
`

`
`NOW THAT WE KNOW THE TECHNOLOGY IS
`
`AVAILABLE AND FEASIBLE, WE ARE ASKING
`
`UNDERWRITERS’ LABORATORY TO REVISE ITS
`
`SAFETY STANDARDS FOR SAWS.
`
`WE BELIEVE THE BAR CAN AND SHOULD BE
`
`RAISED FOR SAFETY WITH POWER SAWS.
`
`REPRESENTATIVES OF U-L ARE HERE WITH
`
`US TODAY, AND I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE
`
`THEIR PRESENCE (MIKE BELCHER AND GORDON
`
`GILLERMAN).
`
`AND NOW IT IS MY GREAT PLEASURE TO
`
`INVITE STEPHEN GASS, PRESIDENT OF SAWSTOP
`
`TO THE PODIUM FOR THE PRESENTATION OF THE
`
`COMMENDATION.

`
`DR.GASS. YOU HAVE DESIGNED
`
`TECHNOLOGY THAT WILL HELP PREVENT
`
`SERIOUS INJURIES FROM POWER SAWS.
`
`OUR CHIEF ENGINEER HUGH MCLAURIN
`
`TELLS ME YOUR TECHNOLOGY IS
`
`"SOPHISTICATED, ROBUST AND INTELLIGENTLY
`
`DESIGNED, WHILE BEING SIMPLE IN ITS
`
`COMPONENTS AND USE."
`
`IT REQUIRES NO SPECIAL ACTION ON THE
`
`PART OF THE USER TO ASSURE PROTECTION.
`
`IT WILL WORK FOR ALL LIKELY USERS OF
`
`TABLE SAWS, FROM THE MOST EXPERIENCED
`
`WOODWORKER TO THE NOVICE.
`
`IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO PREVENT
`
`THOUSANDS OF DISABLING INJURIES EACH
`
`YEAR.

`
`

`
`IT IS TRULY A MARVELOUS INNOVATION.
`
`THERE ARE TWO THINGS THAT E SPECIALLY
`
`PLEASE ME. ONE IS THAT WE LEARNED ABOUT
`
`THIS INNOVATION AT OUR RECENT PRODUCT
`
`SAFETY CIRCLE CONFERENCE, WHERE YOU
`
`DEMONSTRATED IT.
`
`THIS IS EXACTLY THE KIND OF SAFETY
`
`INNOVATION THE PRODUCT SAFETY CIRCLE WAS
`
`INTENDED TO ENCOURAGE.
`
`I CAN THINK OF NO BETTER RESULT OF OUR
`
`CONFERENCE THAN THE ADOPTION OF AN
`
`EXCELLENT SAFETY INNOVATION LIKE THIS.
`
`SOMETHING ELSE THAT PLEASES ME IS THAT
`
`YOURS IS A SMALL COMPANY. YOU HAVE ONLY
`
`FOUR EMPLOYEES.

`
`

`
`IT SHOWS THAT SMALL COMPANIES AS WELL
`
`AS BIG ONES CAN MAKE SIGNIFICANT
`
`CONTRIBUTIONS TO INCREASED SAFETY FOR
`
`AMERICAN CONSUMERS.
`
`IT IS MY PLEASURE NOW TO PRESENT TO
`
`YOU THE CPSC CHAIRMAN’S COMMENDATION
`
`FOR SUBSTANTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO PRODUCT
`
`SAFETY.
`
`THE COMMENDATION READS" PRESENTED TO
`
`SAWSTOP, LLC "FOR DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE
`
`SAFETY TECHNOLOGY FOR POWER SAWS TO
`
`PREVENT FINGER AMPUTATIONS AND OTHER
`
`SERIOUS INJURIES." ANN BROWN, CHAIRMAN,
`
`JULY 20, 2001.
`
`(PRESENT COMMENDATION.)
`
`CONGRATULATIONS.
