`
`To the best of your ability, please describe the circumstances of how the accident happened: This
`incident occurred in a high school wood shop. The student was cross cutting a block of wood for a
`turning blank. He had the wood mounted on a crosscut sled and as he made the cut, he had his left
`thumb in line with the blade. When his thumb touched the blade, the saw stop fired and he was not
`injured.
`
`Estimate of the inju~/if it were to have occurred while using a non-SawStop saw: Partial amputation of
`the left thumb.
`

`of wood for a turning blank. He had the wood mounted on a crosscut sled and as he made the cut, he
`had his left thumb in line with the blade. When his thumb touched the blade, the saw stop fired and he
`was not injured. Our school district bought 15 sawstop saws for all the high schools.
`This is the third save that I know of since the district bought these saws two years ago. It has saved
`us untold thousands in medical and legal bills.

`Dear Folks,
`
`tt~seerns like only yesterday since ! sat down with my school p~’incipa[ to try and convince him of the
`benefits of having a Saw ~top in our school. It was a hard sell but I managed to convince him and we ~schoot. It was a hard sel
`
`purchased the cabinet saw through )n October 21, 2008.
`
`On Friday, Januaq( 21, 20.1.1 a. student touched the blade of ~he saw with his finger, and much to his
`dismay, the blade disappeared and he could not carry on with the cut. He sustained a 1/6" x 1/8" scratch
`to the tip of his 3~d finger of the right hand. He touched the blade after making the cut and the saw had
`been shut down. He is 12 y~ars bid and in Grade 7.
`
`tn ,tune of 2009, one of my students also touched the blade and sustained a small cut to her middle finger
`on her dght hand. She also wondered where the blade went. She was 13 years old at the time, In both
`cases, a bandage was applied and the students went on their way.
`
`This would not have happened-had those students been usinga reguiar saw. They would probably be in
`rehabilifa~ive services for amputees,
`
`t teach 300 +woodworking students per year who each do two or three projects in their classes. I teach
`in a Junior High School of grade 7-9 students ~th e studen~ population of over 750. Since purchasing
`the Saw Stop, almost 1000 students have used it andin that time we have had the above two accidentS.
`That.is atl. Thesaw has made thousands of cuts and has saved the hands of two students in the
`process.
`
`EnGlosed are two brake cartridges thatwere engaged when the students touched the blade. Two-
`fingers/hands S.awd. Thanks Saw Stop, from my school, ~ students and ms for lnwnting such a

`
`To the best of your ability, please describe the circumstances of how the accident happened: 4x4
`redwood being ripped in two stages, 1/2 through, flip over and then the through cut. While pushing the
`end through the cut with the right hand, the left hand, which was guiding the work against the fence
`came in contact with the blade, slipping under the blade guard after the butt end of the work passed
`the blade. This contact immediately triggered the Saw Stop safety device, preventing the hand from
`being drawn into the blade.
`
`Estimate of the inju~/if it were to have occurred while using a non-SawStop saw: Possible amputation
`or severe keft inju~/to the left hand.
`
`Testimonial: The saw stop prevented my hand from being drawn into the turning blade when the wood
`passed the blade and the guiding hand came in contact with the side of the blade. Had the saw not
`stopped immediately, the left hand could have been drawn into the space between the blade and the
`table, or propelled toward the leading or trailing edge of the blade, macerating, lacerating or severing
`digits.

`As far as you know, did the incident involve a kickback situation?: No

`
`What was the approximate feed rate of the material when the accident occured?: 1-2"
`
`To the best of your ability, please describe the circumstances of how the accident happened: Ripping a
`1" sq section from a short 2-3/4"sq stock. The wood vibrated and my finger from the left hand
`apparently touched the blade. This was the second cut from the stock so the waste piece was about
`1/2" wide. I was not using a push stick in the left hand!
`
`Estimate of the inju~/if it were to have occurred while using a non-SawStop saw: I would have cut
`about 1/2 of the tip of my middle finger off.
`
`Testimonial: Having cut my thumb on a table saw before and having an employee cut part of a finger
`off using a table saw, I know how dangerous saws can be. When the need for another saw arose, my
`wife and I discussed the benefits of the Saw Stop and another brand of saw. With me working by
`myself in a one man shop, she felt the extra cost of the Saw Stop would give her peace of mind.
`>From the moment I began assembling the Saw Stop saw, I was sold on the quality ot the saw. I have
`told many people that the Saw Stop is the best 10" saw on the market without the safety features.
`now that I have had a finger save, and nowing from experience the lost time they can cause, I am
`really a believer.
`Should I require another saw in the future, I will only own Saw Stop!
