`Improved Electronic P r o m m Guide with Simultaneous Watch and Record
`
`h4anv electronic p r o m guides toda~' include a record feature. Using t b '
`'?arure, they a l l o ~ a
`viewer to choose a p r o m for recording. When the selected progn-7 begins, the program q i d e
`tunes to the channel showing the program and bepins recording on the VCR. At the end of the
`promam, the guide stops recordin&
`
`drawback of this feature is that the viewer cannot watch TV or use the program
`A si&cant
`guide while the p r o m is being recorded. This invention remedies that drawback, by using a
`settop box with two tuners, or by using.the internal tuner and an external tuner (such as the tuner
`in the VCR or the TV).
`
`If a settop has two tuners, it should also have the ability to direct the output of one to a TV and
`the output of the other to a VCR. This means that-the settop must have at least two independent
`sets of audio/video outputs. If the two tuners are hard-wired to the two outputs. it means that the
`guide must always use the same tuner for recording, which would make the other tuner the
`preferred source for TV watching.
`
`In this invention. a promam may be selected by the viewer to be recorded. using the same means
`as with existing products. However, when the program to be recorded is about to b e ~ n . the guide
`must allocate one of the two tuners for recording, and the other for TV watching.
`
`In the case in which one of the tuners is in the VCR or the TV, the choice of which tuner to use is
`predetermined. The VCR tuner may be controlled using the same method used to start the
`recordinp. This is typically by sending IR commands. The TV tuner may be similarly
`controlled.
`
`In the case of multiple internal tuners in the settop, the mide has more options. If one of the
`tuners is currently in use by the viewer for watching TV, the guide chooses the other tuner. If the
`viewer is currently using both tuners (for example, for picture-in-picture), that activim will need
`to be interrupted. The guide preferably does this by presenting an alert to the viewer to give the
`opwrtunity to either begin the recording or continue the PIP.
`
`While the recording is in progress. the viewer has a similar resuiction against using both tuners
`for watching TV. If the viewer asks to use the second tuner (for example. to bring up picture-in-
`picture). they can be presented with an option to either cancel the recording in propress or cancel
`the PIP request. Alternatively, the guide can process t k PIP reauest in an alternative manner,
`for example by displaying text or graphics instead of the second video window.
`
`I ,
`,
`1
`
`Many cable settop boxes have a single tuner, but also supwrt an RF b v ~ a s s switch. This switch
`will allow the raw cable signal to be routed to the TV or the VCR while the otherdevice receives
`the signal processed by the settop. If, for example. the output of the settop box is routed to the
`

`
`

`

`V C R any programming for which the viewer is authorized may be recorded. The cable-ready
`television may not be able to decode scrambled signals or digital signals, but can be used to watch
`many channels while the VCR is recording something different.
`
`r
`
`If the guide can control the RF bypass switch and if it can send commands (e.g.. IR) to the VCR
`and television, it can provide a verv satisfying watch and record experience in this limited
`environment. The viewer may schedule a recording for any program. At the start of the
`p r o m . the guide will turn on the RF bypass switch, sending the input cable signal directly to
`the television. It will send IR commands to the VCR to initiate recording. At the end of the
`scheduled record in^ the VCR will be stopped and the RF bypass switch will be turned off.
`
`If the viewer wants to watch television during the time while a different program is being
`recorded. the guide can pass the commands to the television. For example, if the viewer presses a
`key on the remote control to change channels. the guide will send that command via IR to the
`*levision, rather than changing the tuner within the settop. This should preferably include
`suppon for last channel and favorite channel features. Similarly. if the viewer adjusts the volume
`that command will be sent to the television.
`
`No on-screen user interface mav be available on the television while the settop is in RF bypass
`mode. This limits access to some features. The guide would ignore such commands (for
`example. presentation of program listings). The guide may use the front panel of the settop to
`display simple information. such as channel number. The guide might also prevent the viewer
`from try in^ to tune any channel which a television cannot decode (such as a scrambled channel).
`If the viewer had set a reminder for the time during which a recording is active, the guide might
`automatically tune the television to the selected program. Alternatively. the guide might allow
`the viewer to toggle between programs with reminders, bv using a predefined key on the remote.
`
`Ifthe viewer attempts to tune to a pionram that is parentallv controlled, the guide may not send
`the commands to the television. Alternatively, it may tune only after the viewer enters a PIN via
`the remote. The mide may prompt for such a PIN on the settop's front-panel display.
`
`An alternative cabling for the RF bypass switch would make the output of the settop available to
`the television, and the raw cable input available to the VCR. In this case, only programs that can
`be decoded by the VCR (ex.. unscrambled analog channels) could be recorded. To begin a
`scheduled recording, the guide would turn on the RF bypass switch. turn on the VCR and change
`its internal tuner to the desired channel, and tell it to bedn recording. To end the recording, the
`VCR would be stopped and the RF bypass switch would be turned off. The viewer would then be
`able to watch television and use the guide normally for the duration of the recording.
`
`As a third RF b v ~ a s s alternative. the switch may allow the mide to choose between the first and
`
`use. the VCR would receive the bypassed signal. When a p r o m is recorded which the VCR
`can decode. the VCR would receive the bypassed signal. If the VCR is unable to decode the
`desired program. it would receive the output of the settop and the television would receive the
`bwassed signal.
`
`,
`,
`
`i
`
`1
`
`As a fourth RF bypass alternative. the switch may allow the guide to independently control
`whether the television or the VCR gets the settop output or the bypassed cable input. The wide
`would normally send the settop output to both devices. If a recording were scheduled on a
`channel which can be decoded by the V C R it would be fed the bypassed for the duration of the
`recording, so that the viewer would be free to watch any other channel simultaneously. If the
`p r o m to be recorded is not decodable by the VCR it would be fed the settov output and the
`bypassed signal would be fed to the television.
`
`second alternative. deciding which of the +YO devices receives the bypassed signal. In normal

`
`ABSTRACT
`(57)
`An interactive television program guide system is provided in
`which a user may use the program guide to watch one pro-
`gram while simultaneously recording another program with-
`out interrupting the recording or viewing process. This inter-
`active television program guide system also allows a user the
`to utilize all or some of the program guide features while in
`the watch and record mode depending on the embodiment
`that is being implemented. Further, this watch and record
`
`system may be implemented using a multiple tuner set-top
`box or a single tuner set-top box with a RF bypass or digital
`switch. In addition to a set-top box, the system may be irnple-
`mented using a satellite receiver, an advanced television with
`a processor and memory, or a computer. The various imple-
`mentations provide a very versatile watch and record envi-
`ronment for the user.
