`
`TITLE:
`
`JOYSTICK DEVICE
`
`This invention is for a joystick that contains two or
`
`15 more micro controls, one of which is located in a handgrip.
`
`The grip is a user input device with one or more switches or
`
`digital inputs operated by an operator's fingers or other
`
`hand motions. Alternatively, the grip includes one or more
`
`proportional or analog inputs also operated by an operator's
`
`. 20
`
`fingers or other hand motions. The grip has a shape that
`
`accommodates an operator's hand according to the specific
`
`application.
`
`In addition, the grip may be mounted on top of
`
`a joystick shaft that allows the grip to move in one or more
`
`directions relative to a base support. All of the inputs of
`
`25
`
`the grip produce signals that are transmitted from the grip
`
`to a point of use or to an intelligent controller.
`
`This invention requires use of an intelligent device,
`
`such as a microprocessor, to combine and convert all of the
`
`user inputs within the grip to digital data and transmit
`
`30
`
`this data via a serial stream using a desired serial
`
`architecture. This requires only a small number of
`
`1
`
`Ex. 1003 Page 0004
`
`

`

`connections to be made with the grip. Some of these
`
`connections are used to accommodate the serial data in any
`
`desired form, such as RS232 or CAN. Other connections are
`
`used to provide power to the intelligent device. Still
`
`5 other connections are used for EMI shielding or other
`
`features of the grip. For many applications, there are
`
`three connections: power, ground, and the serial data
`
`output stream. Power and ground connections supply power to
`
`the intelligent device and grip input devices. The serial
`
`10 data output connection transmits all user input information
`
`from the grip to the point of use. The serial architecture
`
`is either a standard form such as RS232 or CAN.
`
`Alternatively, the serial structure is a custom designed
`
`scheme.
`
`15
`
`The point of use is a second microprocessor located in
`
`the joystick base. Alternatively, the point of use is a
`
`second microprocessor located remotely from the joystick.
`
`This second microprocessor functions to send information to
`
`and receive information from the microprocessor located in
`
`20
`
`the grip handle. This second microprocessor also combines
`
`the input from the grip microprocessor with proportional
`
`sensors, buttons, or switches that are located in the
`
`stationary base of the joystick. The second microprocessor
`
`2
`
`Ex. 1003 Page 0005
`
`

`

`sends all of the information to a remote device via a serial
`
`communication connection. See Fig. 1.
`
`In another embodiment, the joystick device includes a
`
`first microprocessor in the hand grip, as described above.
`
`5
`
`In addition, the joystick includes a second microprocessor
`
`that directly drives control actuators.
`
`In yet another embodiment, the joystick device only
`
`includes a microprocessor in the base.
`
`In this embodiment,
`
`the proportional sensors also are located in the base. The
`
`10 microprocessor combines discrete input from the grip, the
`
`proportional inputs in the base, and other inputs, and sends
`
`the information as a serial communication signal to a
`
`,remotely located point of use.
