`
`Introduction
`
`Electronic mail is fast becoming the medium of choice for communicating
`with others around the world. The planet-spanning Internet has made it
`
`possible for people on opposite sides of the globe to send letters, programs,
`
`pictures, sounds, and more to each other in a matter of seconds.
`
`It’s a stark contrast from the days when people used to wait weeks or months
`for mail from abroad. When American author Eudora Welty wrote a short
`
`story called “Why I Live at the PO,” she could hardly have known that her
`name would one day come to be synonymous with electronic mail in the
`
`Information Age.
`
`The Internet, for all its wonderful potential, can be complicated to use
`because it was initially designed by and for academics. Even something as
`
`“simple” as sending electronic mail (e-mail) can be daunting without the right
`
`tools. It’s thanks in part to user-friendly programs such as Eudora that it’s
`
`possible for people from all walks of life to use e-mail today.
`
`Eudora brings the post office to where you live, to turn a phrase on Ms.
`Welty. Whether you’re interested in swapping letters with a pen pal or
`
`keeping in touch with a distant friend, Eudora lets you do it and also much
`more.
`
`Let Using Eudora, Second Edition, be your guidebook as you explore the
`world of electronic mail, and put this powerful program to work for you.
`
`What this book is
`
`This is a book about QUALCOMM’S popular electronic mail program Eudora,
`
`which is available for Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows systems
`
`(version 3.1 for Macintosh and version 3.0 for Windows). The book covers
`both the freeware and commercial versions of Eudora for both platforms,
`
`though the book mainly focuses on the commercial versions because they
`have extra features that are worth exploring. I’ll be sure to point out each
`feature that is not available in one of the versions.

`
`Using Eudora, Second Edition
`
`I’ve designed this book with the busy professional in mind; it’s nice to be able
`to find out what you need to know without having to wade through text that’s
`either insultingly introductory or intimidatingly technical. I’ve filled that void
`in between.
`
`Here’s a brief look at what’s in store for you in the pages ahead.
`
`Part I: Welcome to the World of
`Electronic Mail
`These chapters provide an introduction to electronic mail for those who need
`or want more background to bring them up to speed.
`
`Chapter 1, “An Introduction to E-Mail,” eases you into the book with some
`basic background material you’ll need later when we start using Eudora.
`
`Chapter 2, “The Power of E-Mail," illustrates some of the many neat things
`you can do with e-mail.
`
`Chapter 3, “How Internet E—Mail Works,” is designed to give you a bitter
`picture of how e-mail works, and it points out e-mail’s strengths and weak-
`nesses.
`
`Chapter 4, “E-Mail Writing Style,” points out the importance of “netiquette”
`and the peculiarities of communicating in a world without body language.
`
`Part II: Getting Started
`These chapters cover the installation and configuration of Eudora and how to
`get connected to the Internet.
`
`Chapter 5, “Installing and Setting Up Eudora on a Macintosh,” takes you
`through the installation and initial configuration process on your Apple
`Macintosh.
`
`Chapter 6, “Installing and Setting Up Eudora on Windows,” shows Microsoft
`Windows users how to install and configure the basics of Eudora on their
`PCs.
`
`Chapter 7, “Connecting with Eudora," deals with the business of connecting
`Eudora to the Internet.
`
`Chapter 8, “Staying Informed,” explains how you can get in touch with
`QUALCOMM and how to find out about the latest versions of Eudora.

`Introduction 3
`
`Part III: Using Eudora
`Here you’ll learn how to do day—to-day tasks such as writing, sending, and
`
`replying to e-mail with Eudora. You’ll also get a glimpse at some of the more
`
`useful (and often obscure) things you can do with e-mail.
`
`Chapter 9, “Sending E—Mail,” illustrates, step-by—step, how to configure
`Eudora to send your e-mail and how to compose and send a letter.
`
`Chapter 10, “The Address Book and Nicknames," covers the Eudora Address
`
`Book, which allows you to keep frequently used addresses stored and handy,
`
`and also nicknames, which are short, easy—to-remember replacements for
`entire addresses.
`
`Chapter 11, “Editing E-Mail,” discusses the more advanced sending e-mail
`
`topics, such as how to edit and spell check your outgoing mail.
`
`Chapter 12, “Receiving E-Mail,” shows you how to configure Eudora to check
`your e-mail and how to check for and retrieve new mail.
`
`Chapter 13, “Responding to E-Mail,” points out the differences between
`
`replying to a letter and composing an original letter. It also illustrates how to
`
`configure Eudora for answering e-mail and how to forward and redirect e—
`mail you receive.
`
`Chapter 14, “Sending and Receiving Files,” shows you how to configure
`Eudora to use attachments and how to encode programs, graphics, and
`
`sound files to send by e-mail.
`
`Part IV: Managing Your E-Mail
`These chapters teach you the essentials of managing your e-mail and point
`out some useful ways you can manipulate your mail.
`
`Chapter 15, “Mailboxes and Folders,” goes into more detail about Eudora’s
`mailboxes and folders, and how you can use them to organize your e-mail.
`
`Chapter 16, “Working with Mail,” shows you how to save, move, copy, and
`delete mail from your mailboxes.
`
`Part V: Advanced Features
`
`Now that you understand the basics of using Eudora, we can move on to the
`
`more advanced things the program can do for you.

`
`Part III Using Eudora
`
`Checking mail manually
`Even if Eudora’s configured to check mail automatically, you can check
`manually when you feel like it. To check your mail manually, simply open the
`Eile menu and choose Check Mail, or use Ctrl+M. You also can click the
`Check Mail button in all but the Macintosh Light version. If Eudora needs
`your password, you’ll get the Enter Password dialog box. After that, you’ll get
`a series of Progress windows that let you know how your connection is
`progressing.
`
`O'I'E Eudora doesn’t count that manual mail check as one of its auto-
`matic checks, so it will still check your mail at the next scheduled time This
`happens even if you check manually only five minutes before the automatic
`check was scheduled.
`
`If there’s no mail waiting for you, you’ll get the No New Mail dialog box.
`Figures 12.5 and 12.6 show the No New Mail dialog box for Windows and
`Macintosh systems.

`Reading mail
`
`Okay, you’ve got your mail on your computer. That’s the first step. Now, how
`do you read it?
`
`Opening a mailbox
`Open the Mailbox menu and choose the mailbox you want to open (the In
`mailbox will already be open if you configured Eudora to open a mailbox
`
`when new mail anives). New mail will be in the In mailbox.

`
`You can also click the Open In Mailbox button to
`open the In mailbox in all versions except Macintosh Light.
`'
`'
`In the Windows versions, you can also double—click In in the mailbox tree to
`the left (see Figures 12.11 and 12.12). Chapter 15 discusses how to use and
`manage mailboxes in more detail.
`
`Figures 12.11 and 12.12 show you what the mailbox looks like in both the
`Macintosh and Windows versions of Eudora.
