`IPR2019-00849
`Patent No. 9,632,193
`
`I, Fred Aminzadeh, hereby declare as follows:
`
`1.
`
`I am over 18 years of age and personally competent to make this
`
`declaration, having personal knowledge of all facts set forth herein.
`
`2.
`
`I am currently a professor with the University of Southern California
`
`and President of a corporation. I also serve as the Managing Director for the USC
`
`Global Energy Network (GEN).
`
`3.
`
`I have been a member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists
`
`(SEG) for over four decades. I have served as SEG President (2007–2008) and
`
`SEG Vice President (2001–2002) and received an Honorary Membership in 2018.
`
`4.
`
`I have presented multiple papers at SEG conferences and was familiar
`
`with the process during my time with the organization. I have presented or was a
`
`co-author of papers at the SEG conference in at least the following years: 2004,
`
`2005, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016.
`
`5.
`
`Over the years, the SEG typically hosted one annual conference per
`
`year, during which papers were presented.
`
`6.
`
`Authors submit papers to the SEG several months before the SEG
`
`conference. The papers are kept confidential by the SEG at that time. The SEG,
`
`with the help of its Technical Program Committee and assigned reviewers for each

`
`paper, uses a selection process to identify which papers are accepted for
`
`presentation. The acceptance rate is usually between 40% to 70%.
`
`7.
`
`To the best of my recollection, in the 2010-2013 time frame, papers
`
`accepted for presentation at the SEG annual conference were first made available
`
`to the conference attendees at the conference itself. This is usually done by
`
`including the papers to be presented at the conference in one or more volumes of
`
`the “Annual Meeting Extended Abstracts.” The extended abstracts are usually
`
`available beginning on the start of the annual conference. The papers are not made
`
`available to the public for free, and instead are made available during or after the
`
`conference for a fee or as part of the registration fee. The papers were made
`
`available under strict rules against replication and distribution.
`
`8.
`
`To the best of my knowledge, during this same time period, a date
`
`provided for the paper that was earlier than the conference date only identified the
`
`date on which the paper was accepted for presentation at the SEG conference, and
`
`not the date on which the paper was actually available to SEG conference
`
`attendees.
