`PROTECTING YOUR INVENTION OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES
`Since the rights granted by a U.S. patent extend only throughout the territory of the United States and have
`no effect in a foreign country, an inventor who wishes patent protection in another country must apply for a
`patent in a specific country or in regional patent offices. Applicants may wish to consider the filing of an
`international application under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). An international (PCT) application
`generally has the same effect as a regular national patent application in each PCT-member country. The
`PCT process simplifies the filing of patent applications on the same invention in member countries, but
`does not result in a grant of "an international patent" and does not eliminate the need of applicants to file
`additional documents and fees in countries where patent protection is desired.

`

`

`Almost every country has its own patent law, and a person desiring a patent in a particular country must
`make an application for patent in that country in accordance with its particular laws. Since the laws of many
`countries differ in various respects from the patent law of the United States, applicants are advised to seek
`guidance from specific foreign countries to ensure that patent rights are not lost prematurely.
`
`Applicants also are advised that in the case of inventions made in the United States, the Director of the
`USPTO must issue a license before applicants can apply for a patent in a foreign country. The filing of a U.S.
`patent application serves as a request for a foreign filing license. The application's filing receipt contains
`further information and guidance as to the status of applicant's license for foreign filing.
`
`Applicants may wish to consult the USPTO booklet, "General Information Concerning Patents" (specifically,
`the section entitled "Treaties and Foreign Patents") for more information on timeframes and deadlines for
`filing foreign patent applications. The guide is available either by contacting the USPTO Contact Center at
`800-786-9199, or it can be viewed on the USPTO website at
`http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/index.html.
`
`For information on preventing theft of your intellectual property (patents, trademarks and copyrights), you
`may wish to consult the U.S. Government website, http://www.stopfakes.gov. Part of a Department of
`Commerce initiative, this website includes self-help "toolkits" giving innovators guidance on how to protect
`intellectual property in specific countries such as China, Korea and Mexico. For questions regarding patent
`enforcement issues, applicants may call the U.S. Government hotline at 1-866-999-HAL T (1-866-999-4158).
`
`LICENSE FOR FOREIGN FILING UNDER
`Title 35, United States Code, Section 184
`Title 37, Code of Federal Regulations, 5.11 & 5.15
`
`GRANTED
`The applicant has been granted a license under 35 U.S.C. 184, if the phrase "IF REQUIRED, FOREIGN
`FILING LICENSE GRANTED" followed by a date appears on this form. Such licenses are issued in all
`applications where the conditions for issuance of a license have been met, regardless of whether or not a
`license may be required as set forth in 37 CFR 5.15. The scope and limitations of this license are set forth in
`37 CFR 5.15(a) unless an earlier license has been issued under 37 CFR 5.15(b). The license is subject to
`revocation upon written notification. The date indicated is the effective date of the license, unless an earlier
`license of similar scope has been granted under 37 CFR 5.13 or 5.14.
`
`This license is to be retained by the licensee and may be used at any time on or after the effective date
`thereof unless it is revoked. This license is automatically transferred to any related applications(s) filed under
`37 CFR 1.53(d). This license is not retroactive.
`
`The grant of a license does not in any way lessen the responsibility of a licensee for the security of the
`subject matter as imposed by any Government contract or the provisions of existing laws relating to
`espionage and the national security or the export of technical data. Licensees should apprise themselves of
`current regulations especially with respect to certain countries, of other agencies, particularly the Office of
`Defense Trade Controls, Department of State (with respect to Arms, Munitions and Implements of War (22
`CFR 121-128)); the Bureau of Industry and Security, Department of Commerce (15 CFR parts 730-774); the
`Office of Foreign AssetsControl, Department of Treasury (31 CFR Parts 500+) and the Department of
`Energy.
`
`NOT GRANTED
`No license under 35 U.S.C. 184 has been granted at this time, if the phrase "IF REQUIRED, FOREIGN
`FILING LICENSE GRANTED" DOES NOT appear on this form. Applicant may still petition for a license
`under 37 CFR 5.12, if a license is desired before the expiration of 6 months from the filing date of the
`application. If 6 months has lapsed from the filing date of this application and the licensee has not received
`any indication of a secrecy order under 35 U.S.C. 181, the licensee may foreign file the application pursuant

`

`BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
`
`For many years, film cameras were the only option for capturing high definition or cinema quality
`motion pictures. The time and costs for shooting and processing film, to be ultimately scanned
`into a digital form has created a need for inventive motion picture cameras which can directly
`capture high definition or cinema resolution imagery directly in a digital form. The desire for this
`camera would be to reduce costs, leverage digital processing and visualization tools, improve
`speed of user feedback, improve flexibility in networked collaboration and most importantly
`maintain film like reproduction qualities and camera operation.
`
`In recent years, digital cameras have been developed to address some of these needs.
`However, they have been complex, hardware limiting and expensive. They incorporate low-
`resolution image sensors with native pixel arrays, which may be below 1920 x 1080 and often use
`a multiple sensor prism block, which require use of complex and expensive optics. They utilize
`dedicated hardware functions with limited image processing flexibility or upgradability. These
`dedicated hardware functions include video processing to perform non-reversible color space
`transformations and subsampling to formats, such as YUV 4:2:2. They implement a variety of
`proprietary compression and coding schemes that introduce visible image artifacts, especially
`when projected on large screens. They generate preview imagery for displayed on an electronic
`viewfinder with limited resolution or visualization tools. High-resolution outputs are restricted to
`transmission and display using expensive HD-SDI standard interfaces and only provide access to
`the already processed pixel data. They often output imagery to be record on restrictive,
`proprietary or large external storage devices. These include tape storage system with only linear
`data access, Non-Volatile Flash or RAM drives with limited storage and multiple hard disk drive
`RAID storage systems which are often non-portable and whose media cannot be easily removed
`or transported for direct use in other systems. Finally, the files which are stored have limited color
`correction, image processing or production process metadata integration, require custom have
`limited color
`
`Many digital still cameras or dual mode video and still camcorders have also been developed, in
`recent years, which use single image sensors with color filter arrays. These devices do use
`higher resolution sensors. However, they have slow readout architectures and can only achieve
`video rate preview at low resolution or standard definition using subsampling or windowing
`techniques.
`These cameras use dedicated hardware functions or targeted function DSPs to
`perform image processing to interpolate and colorize the raw sensor image data. Then compress
`the colorized images for storage; a process, which prevents access to the original full raw image
`pixel data for later processing, analysis or colorization.
`In addition, the interpolation and color
`processing applied in those devices initially generate larger data sets, than the source raw data
`and then must apply higher compression to fit into a target storage capacity. This typically results
`in a reduction in image quality compared to the original image or a coded version of the raw data.
`
`Some digital cameras would allow for the capture and storage of individual raw pixel data images
`in camera. However, these devices would be limited by the entire hardware architecture in
`capture frame rates, image processing flexibility, display resolutions, connectivity option,
`streaming bandwidth capability, network connectivity, remote control, metadata integration and
`storage mechanisms.
`
`In recent years there has also been a resurgence of interest in producing digital cinema quality
`3D stereographic and immersive content using multiple cameras. The digital cameras used to
`produce this content, not only had the system limitations described above, require precise
`synchronization mechanism to enable images to be mixed or stitched without motion artifacts.
`These cameras are large and bulky. They cannot be placed very close together, such as those
`used for short inter-ocular distances in 30 stereographic or for creating hemispherical views
`where cameras need to placed as close together from a common center point. When shooting
`thru mirrors and beam splitters, the rigs become more cumbersome and difficult to use in

`handheld shooting environments. Finally, these camera systems do not provide a
`comprehensive set of image processing, visualization, positioning control, recording, playback,
`communication and display tools for use in such high-definition multi-camera systems.
`
`SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
`
`The disclosed invention describes a digital camera system that captures high definition raw
`images at film or video rates, uses software to processes the images for visualization in a non-
`destructive fashion and simultaneously stores the raw imagery in its original or near original
`representation. This enables reduced processing complexity, improved storage efficiency,
`increased flexibility and tools for visualization and analysis during recording, playback or post
`processing. The disclosed digital camera system may include optics, an image sensor, a frame
`grabber, a processor, software, user input mechanism, a display and storage means. In addition,
`a configuration is disclosed using multiple digital camera systems with the ability to synchronize
`the cameras, coordinate control and combine image processing, recording, display and
`communication using one or more processing systems.

`
`DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
`
`The disclosed invention describes a digital camera system represented by Figure 1. The camera
`system uses optics to gather light from a desired scene to a pixilated sensor. The sensor
`captures high definition raw images at film or video rates. The sensor may be based on CMOS,
`CCD or other pixilated detection devices with color filters used to capture a representation of the
`full color images. The pixel data is readout of the sensor at variable clock speeds or resolutions
`and is captured thru a frame grabber. The images output from the sensor may be captured by the
`frame grabber either continuously or intermittent basis.
`
`The frame grabber may have on board memory to capture full frame images or buffer the image
`data for transfer to the processing subsystem with its associated memory. The frame grabber
`can be used for image preprocessing such as noise and pixel defect correction, black frame
`offset correction, data packing or data coding which may be lossy or lossless.
`It can also be used
`to generate a scan-converted output using standard definition or high definition digital or analog
`outputs. The frame grabber may be used to receive input from external components or from the
`processing subsystem to initiate specific actions. The frame grabber may also generate outputs
`for lighting control, positioning of motors such as pan and tilts, slide motion stages or lens motors
`for zoom, focus or iris and can generate synchronization signals for multi-camera operation.
`
`The data channel between the frame grabber and processing subsystem may transfer the
`resulting image data at variable speeds, which may be below, at or above the readout rate of the
`In the case of the data channel capacity being less than the rate of readout, multiple
`sensor.
`images can be buffered in local frame grabber memory and images transmitted using a first in,

`first out basis or in a skipped frame fashion. All imagery may be buffered until the memory is
`filled and then emptied at the available channel rate.
`
`Data is received by the processor subsystem and may include image data, metadata or control
`signals. The metadata may include information pertaining to the frame grabber or image sensor,
`camera or lens settings, scene data, or external inputs, such as audio, GPS, time stamp or motor
`position feedback.
`
`The processor executes reprogrammable software to perform image processing for visualization,
`analysis, or storage. The processor may be either dedicated hardware or general purpose CPU,
`GPU or DSP or combination thereof.
`
`The image processing functions may include image correction, interpolation, white balance, color
`correction, color transformation including the use of three dimensional look-up tables, motion
`detection, object detection and classification, tracking, triangulation, calibration, color keying,
`image mixing, stereographic processing, anaglyph generation, indicator overlay, focus detection,
`exposure metering, zooming and scaling, flipping, data packing, pattern matching and
`recognition, face recognition, data rate analysis, enhancement, stabilization and compression.
`The image processing functions may be software selectable and may be combined for multiple
`image processing functions.
`
`The data can be stored, displayed, or transmitted. The processor generates the file management
`system for subsequent data storage. The processor should be capable of generating a low
`latency representation of the scene to the display for user feedback and interactive control or
`positioning.
`In the event the processing subsystem is not capable of displaying full resolution, full
`frame representations, the processor can send a reduced resolution or reduced frame rate to the
`display, to maintain the low latency.
`
`The display devices may include electronic viewfinders, CRT monitors, LCD, OLEO, LCOS
`displays or projectors, or stereographic displays, such as VR goggles. The display device may
`be on-board the camera or remotely connected.
`
`The processor can output raw image data, image processed data or metadata in any combi
