`Availability
`
`At Oracle Open World 99, Oracle, the number one choice in e-business, has announced the pending availability
`of Oracle8i Release 2, the follow-on to Oracle8i, the most rapidly adopted database product ever released by the
`company. To date, more than 5000 "Dot Coms" and other enterprises are powering their e-businesses with
`Oracle8i, the database designed for the Internet. Additionally, over 800 Independent Software Vendors (ISVs)
`have developed applications and tools optimised for Oracle8i data warehousing and online transaction processing
`features since the product's release in March 1999.
`
`"Oracle8i Release 2 is a key milestone for Oracle and its partners," said Nick Gregory, product marketing
`manager, Oracle UK. "It strengthens and expands Oracle's commitment to Internet computing by improving
`product performance, quality, and native support for technologies like Java and XML. Over the last two years,
`Oracle has presented our customers with the simple proposition that the Internet changes everything. The result
`has been the fantastic uptake of Oracle8i and a clear endorsement of Oracle's strong focus and leadership in
`e-business."
`
`Since its release in March, more than 5,000 companies have purchased the leading Internet database, Oracle8i.
`In addition, developers have downloaded more than 256,000 copies of Oracle8i, almost 100,000 copies of
`Oracle8i on Linux and nearly 100,000 copies of Oracle8i for NT. A recent survey of customers on the Oracle
`Technology Network, (http://technet.oracle.com/), showed that 70 percent of the 3,600 responding companies
`planned to deploy Oracle8i within the next 12 months - nearly 850 of those companies by the end of the 1999 -
`citing the scalability and Java integration of Oracle8i as key reasons for their deployment.
`
`Oracle8i Release 2 incorporates several powerful new capabilities to meet these needs such as advanced,
`built-in analytical functions for data warehousing, support for Java2, the latest incarnation of the Java language,
`and a high availability database configuration that reduces failover time from minutes to seconds.
`
`"Oracle was clearly the best choice on which to run SupplierMarket.com," said Murali Menon, vice president of
`engineering for SupplierMarket.com. "We were impressed with Oracle's unmatched commitment to the
`Internet-because SupplierMarket.com's tools are completely browser -based-there's no software for our users to
`download. We needed to be sure our database wouldn't let us down."
`
`Acxiom, which provides a wide spectrum of data products, data integration services, mailing list services,
`modelling and analysis, and information technology outsourcing services, as well as data warehousing and
`decision support services to major U.S. and international firms, chose Oracle8i to hold its extremely large data
`stores. "For data warehousing Oracle8i provides us with a highly scalable and reliable database. Our average
`database holds over one terabyte of raw data. Oracle8i has proven itself capable to handle this data and
`exponential growth. We are building a system now that will be a total of 12 terabytes and next year it will be 20
`terabytes, all managed by Oracle8i," said Tim Donar, system architect at Acxiom. "The data warehousing
`features, hash partitioning, cube, rollup, resource manager, and materialised views that Oracle has integrated into
`Oracle8i have allowed Acxiom to better mine and use its information on a daily basis."

`Bank One Corporation has deployed Oracle8i, along with other Oracle tools, as a part of the Commercial Bank's
`customer relationship manager tool called the Customer Knowledge Centre. "Oracle8i allows us to create a
`seamless development and deployment environment. In our search for a core platform on which to base our
`applications, Oracle8i let us deploy our application that made sense for us and our business," said Mark E.
`Johnson, vice president, Commercial Bank Technology at Bank One. "The tight integration of Oracle Tools and
`other products with Oracle8i also makes it easy for us to get our applications into production in a matter of weeks,
`dramatically cutting implementation time and costs."
`
`With Release 2, Oracle has added:
`
`* Expanded analytical data warehousing functions including ranking, moving window, period-over-period
`comparisons, ratio-to-report, cumulative aggregates and lag/lead expression. Reduces SQL complexity, scales
`better and provides richer analytical capabilities;
`
`* Native support for Java2, remote debugging of Java programs and a 100 percent-Java XML parser to Oracle8i's
`integrated Java Virtual Machine (JVM), Oracle JServer. An enterprise ready Java development and deployment
`platform.
`
`* Oracle Enterprise Manager 2.1, which includes web-based control of 12 key Oracle sub-systems including
`Oracle Parallel Server, Oracle interMedia and Oracle Applications. Intuitive graphical management for a wide
`range of solution components
`
`* New High Availability Database Configuration of Oracle Parallel Server that increases failover performance by a
`factor of 10; and
`
`* Performance improvements to Oracle JServer, Oracle Parallel Server and applications. In the tradition of every
`previous release of Oracle's database, Oracle8i Release 2 will once again set new, industry-leading performance
`standards.
`
`Oracle8i Release 2 is scheduled to be available in December.
`
