`TEST DETAILS
`
`Cobb Ring
`
`Each of the six hardboard mills will .contribute seven 11" wide test panels to
`each test laboratory cut from nom. 12" lap siding. Cooperator test laboratories
`will cut the 11" panels to the required dimensions for their particular size Cobb
`Rings. Either clamp and gasket or a butyl caulk seal, which has been determined
`not to contribute to weight change in the test , may be used.
`
`Six replicates will be run plus a seventh panel without a ring as a cont_rol.
`Laboratories which have controlled environment areas should run the tests at 70°F
`and 50% relative humidity. Other laboratories should test at room temperature and
`humidity and monitor and record both if possible .

`laboratories running the tests, but two of them are
`There are nine
`running all three ring sizes, so 13 of the 11" wide test pieces will be
`required from each lap. These are to be cut from 16 foot pieces of lap
`siding as far as possible from ends and edges of the hardboard press.
`Consequently, the two nom. 12" laps which are cut from the center of press
`master sheets should be used and, even with saw cuts, it will be possible
`to cut the required 11" sections and still discard approximately 18 inches
`from each end of 16 foot lap boards. Seven 16 ' boards will be required
`from each manufacturer as illustrated below.

`Each 11" sample panel will be labeled on the back with the manufacturer code
`letter (i.e . , Temple - T), a number which denotes position down the length
`of the 16-foot piece and another letter (A-G) to identify the individual lap.
`Each board manufacturer will then send each test laboratory a set of seven
`panels (except Reliance and Glidden labs each get three such sets) with one
`piece from each of the seven laps . The position down the length of each lap
`should be as random as possible. Thus, for example, a set of panels might be
`shipped from Temple to one of the test laboratories with the following labels:
`T4A, T3B, TBC, T3D, T7E, Tl2F, T9G.
`
`In addition to the seven test laps, an eighth lap should be obtained by
`each board supplier, cut into six or more replicates and tested by that manu(cid:173)
`facturer to obtain a better measure of test variance.

`COBB RING INSTRUCTIONS
`
`Definition
`
`A Cobb unit is defined as the amount of distilled water weight increase in
`grams per 100 square inches of surface area (discounting additional areas
`contributed by texturings or grooves) per 24 hour tillle period.
`
`1. Rings should be cut from Stainless Steel, Aluminum or PVC pipe. The
`ring diameter can be any size, but useful and reliable information has
`been obtained using aluminum rings of 4" 1.D., wall thickness of 3/8"
`and height of l".
`
`2. Coated boards for measurement and control purposes should be cut in square
`sizes which are approximately 1" greater than the diameter of the ring.
`(5" X 5" for the rings suggested in item 1.)
`
`3. A bead of DAP butyl caulk (or other suitable butyl or silicone caulk
`which has been determined not to contribute to wt. change) should be
`applied to the edge of the ring. The ring is then attached to the coated
`face of the board with gentle pressure and a slight twisting motion;
`some caulk squeeze out will occur inside of the ring. A ring need not be
`applied to the control boards. Alternatively, a clamp and gasket technique
`may be used.
`
`4. Allow the boards with rings and controls without rings to equilibrate
`for seven days at room temperature and room himidity.
`Ideally this should
`be 70°F ± 5° and 50-607. RH.
`
`(A Blue M humidity cabinet set at 70°F and 507. RH is recommended if
`available.)
`
`5. Weigh (grams) the controls and record the weight. Weigh (grams) the
`boards with rings and record the weight.
`
`6 . Fill each ring with approximately 1/2" of distilled water.
`
`7. After 24 hours, dump the water out and blot the ring surface completely
`dry with a soft paper towel.
`Immediately weigh (grams) and record the
`new weight (grams) of the coated boards with rings.
`
`8. Weigh (grams) and record the weight of the control boards after all
`measurements from item 7 have been concluded.
`If the weights of the
`control boards change by more than 0.20 gram for a 5" x 5" control, the
`entire test is not valid.
`
`9. Calculate the increase in weight (grams) for the coated boards with rings
`by simple subtraction.

`IPR of U.S. Pat. No. 8,474,197
`Page 4
`
`

`

`Page 2
`
`10. The Cobb unit (C.U.) factor for the rings used in the test can be
`calculated from the following equation:
`
`..
`C.U. Factor c 100
`Area (ring)
`
`100
`'Tlr 2
`
`r c radius
`
`i.e., for 4" I.D. ring
`
`C.U. Factor m 100
`3.14 (2) 2
`
`= 100
`12.56
`
`.. 7.96
`
`11. Calculate the C.U . for each coated sample with ring and control without
`ring by multiplying the C.U. Factor times the weight change after 24
`hours.
`
`Additional Procedures:
`
`1. Metal rings can be removed from the coated boards by pulling the ring
`.from the board and cleaning in lacquer solvent.
`
`2. For textured boards without a groove in the coated panel, apply additional
`caulk to the outside of the ring to get a satisfactory seal after attaching
`the ring to the coated board.
`
`3. For boards with a groove in the coated board, the ring should be attached
`to the board so that at least one groove length will be the same as
`the diameter of the ring. Extra caulk should be applied in the groove
`at the appropriate spot before attaching the ring in order to get a
`good seal. Extra caulk may have to be applied in the groove outside
`of the ring after attaching the ring in order to get a good seal .
`
`4. An electronic balance ~ith 400 gram capacity and 0.01 accuracy is
`required.
`
`5. During equilibration and testing of the boards with rings and control
`boards without rings, the boards should be stored coated side up and
`single high on a flat counter top which is impervious to moisture .
`
`If the Blue M humidity cabinet is used, the rings must not be stacked
`upon each other. It is recommended that the rings be stacked coated
`side up and single high on wire racks at least 2 inches above or below
`adjacent rings. Care must be taken so as not to overload the humidity
`chamber with rings containing water.
