`Oriented Strand Board Roof and Wall Sheathing,
`Combination Subfloor/Underlayment, Stair Treads and
`SmartStart Lap and Panel Siding.
`2.0 DESCRIPTION
`2.1 General:
`Louisiana-Pacific Corporation (L-P) oriented strand board
`panels are for use as roof and wall sheathing, combination
`subfloor/underlayment, and lap and panel siding. The
`strands in the surface layers of the panels are oriented
`along the length of the panels while the strands in the core
`of the panels are oriented randomly or along the width of the
`panels. The strands are bonded together by a heated
`pressure-forming process in accordance with the approved
`quality control manual. The panels have a density of
`approximately 40 pcf (640 kg/m3) and are supplied in 4-foot
`(1219 mm) widths and 8-foot (2438 mm) lengths. They are
`available in 1/4-, 3/8-, 7/16-, 15/32-, 1/2 -,19/32-, 5/8-, 23/32-, 3/4-, 7/8-,
`1- and 11/8-inch (6.4, 9.5, 11.1, 11.9, 12.7, 15.1, 15.9, 18.3,
`19.1, 22, 25.4, and 28.6 mm) thicknesses. The 19/32-inch and
`thicker combination subfloor/underlayment panels are
`available with tongue-and-groove edges.
`All panels must be installed with a minimum 1/8-inch (3.2
`mm) gap along all panel edges and ends. Unless otherwise
`specified, the panel must be fastened with 6d common nails
`for thicknesses through 1/2 inch (12.7 mm), and 8d common
`nails for greater thicknesses. Nails must be spaced a
`maximum of 6 inches (152 mm) on center along panel
`edges and 12
`inches (305 mm) on center along
`intermediate supports, except for 48-inch (1219 mm) spans
`where the maximum spacing is 6 inches (152 mm) on
`center along intermediate supports. In areas where the
`design wind speed specified by the 1997 Uniform Building
`Code™ (UBC) is greater than 80 mph, the designer must
`investigate the need for denser nailing patterns on roof
`sheathing. Fasteners must be placed with a minimum panel
`edge distance of 3/8 inch (9.5 mm).
`A 3/4-inch (19.1 mm) expansion joint with separate framing
`members must be provided at intervals that preclude
`continuous sections of panels exceeding 80 feet (24 384
`mm) in length. A 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) gap must be provided
`
`between the panel edge and concrete or masonry walls.
`Cut-outs must be oversized for plumbing and electrical
`systems, to avoid tight-fitting contact between piping or
`conduit and cut-out panel edges. The L-P oriented strand
`board panels have been evaluated in accordance with the
`American Plywood Association
`(APA) PRP-108,
`“Performance Standards and Policies for Structural Use
`Panels” (ER-5681) as:
`1. APA Rated Sturd-I-Floor
`2. APA Rated Sheathing
`3. APA Structural I Rated Sheathing
`4. APA Rated Siding
`The panels are permitted to be used in horizontal
`diaphragms to resist wind and seismic forces when they are
`installed in accordance with Table 1. The unblocked
`diaphragm values shown in Table 1 also apply to
`assemblies with panels having tongue-and-groove joints
`along the longitudinal panel edges. Structural-use panels
`are used as roof and wall sheathing.
`2.2 Roof Sheathing:
`L-P oriented strand board panels are available as Rated
`Sheathing and Structural I Rated Sheathing. When used as
`roof sheathing, the panels must be protected by an
`approved
`roof covering material. The panels are
`manufactured with roof span ratings of 16, 20, 24, 32, 40
`and 48 inches (406, 508, 610, 813, 1016, and 1219 mm).
`The allowable live loads applied to the panels are described
`in Tables 2 and 3, and the allowable dead load is 10 pounds
`per square foot (0.479 kN/m2). All panels must have edge
`support and span and load conditions as indicated in Tables
`2 and 3, and must be installed over two or more spans with
`the long panel dimension perpendicular to supports (except
`as provided in Table 3). Except as noted in Section 2.1, roof
`sheathing panels must be fastened with 8d common nails
`for thicknesses through 1 inch (25.4 mm).
`2.3 Wall Sheathing:
`L-P oriented strand board panels are available as Rated
`Sheathing and Structural I Rated Sheathing. The panels are
`manufactured with wall sheathing span ratings of 24 inches
`(610 mm). When used as wall sheathing, panels identified
`as Exposure 1 are considered water-repellant panel
`sheathing under Section 1402.1 of the UBC and must be
`covered with an approved exterior wall covering complying
`with the UBC.
`When the panels are used in lieu of continuous diagonal
`braces, panels shall be installed in accordance with Section
`2320.11.3 of the UBC. All horizontal joints must have 2-
`inch-by-4-inch (51 mm by 102 mm) solid blocking. Panels
`
` are not to be construed as representing aesthetics or any other attributes not specifically addressed, nor are they to be construed as
`an endorsement of the subject of the report or a recommendation for its use. There is no warranty by ICBO Evaluation Service, Inc., express or implied,
`as to any finding or other matter in this report, or as to any product covered by the report.

`
`1/2 inch (12.7 mm) thick and less must be fastened with 6d
`common nails; 8d common nails must be used for thicker
`panels. Nails must be spaced 6 inches (152 mm) on center
`at panel edges supported by framing, and 12 inches (305
`mm) on center at other supports.
`Maximum allowable racking shear loads are indicated in
`Table 4.
`2.4 Combination Subfloor/Underlayment:
`combination
`L-P Sturd-I-Floor panels used as
`subfloor/underlayment must not exceed the support spacing
`and loads indicated in Table 5.
`Panels intended for use under nontextile-resilient flooring
`must be covered with a 1/4-inch (6.4 mm) minimum
`thickness of underlayment. If panels are square-edged and
`resilient floor covering is to be applied directly, panel edges
`must be supported by 2-inch-thick (51 mm) lumber blocking.
`Where panels are covered with a 1/4-inch-thick (6.4 mm)
`underlayment or have tongue-and-groove edges, blocking
`is not required, unless it is required by Table 1.
`2.5 Stair Treads:
`L-P 23/32-inch (18.3 mm) and thicker OSB panels labeled
`APA Series N-120, are permitted for use as stair treads
`spanning a maximum of 45 inches (1143 mm) between
`stringers. Stair tread width must not exceed 12 inches (305
`mm) between risers. The panels must be supported at both
`front and back by a full-length riser fabricated from any
`available APA panel grade at least 19/32 inch (15.1 mm) thick
`and fastened with 8d common nails. The treads must be
`nailed to the front riser with 8d common nails spaced a
`maximum of 12 inches (305 mm) on center. The back riser
`must extend down flush with, or past, the bottom tread and
`must be nailed to the treads with 8d common nails spaced
`a maximum of 6 inches (152 mm) on center through the
`center of the tread. To reduce splitting, 3/32-inch (2.38 mm)
`holes must be predrilled on site at mid-thickness of the
`treads at locations receiving nails. In addition to nailing,
`gluing is permitted.
`2.6 SmartSystem Siding:
`2.6.1 General: L-P SmartSystem sidings are a composite
`product consisting of an engineered wood substrate
`containing zinc borate, bonded to a phenolic resin-
`saturated, primed paper overlay with glue line. The overlay
`is embossed during the manufacturing process with a
`smooth or simulated rough-sawn cedar texture. A sealer is
`applied during the manufacturing process to all edges. The
`panels are 3/8, 7/16, or 19/32 inch (9.5, 11.1, or 15.1 mm) thick
`and are manufactured in accordance with the approved
`quality control manual. SmartSystem siding is produced as
`SmartLap and SmartPanel siding configurations.
`2.6.2 SmartLap Siding: SmartLap siding is a lap siding
`available in widths of 6, 8, 91/2 and 12 inches (152, 203, 241
`and 305 mm), and thicknesses of 3/8 and 7/16 inch (9.5 and
`11.1 mm). The siding is attached directly to framing
`members spaced a maximum of 24 inches (610 mm) on
`center or over one of the following nailable sheathings:
`1. Nominal 1-inch (25.4 mm) boards with studs a
`maximum of 24 inches (406 or 610 mm) on center.
`2. Sheathing panels with a roof span rating of 24 inches
`(610 mm) or greater, with the long dimension placed
`either parallel or perpendicular to studs a maximum of
`24 inches (406 or 610 mm) on center.
`
` ER-5905
`
`3. Sheathing panels with a roof-span rating of less than
`24 inches (610 mm), with the long dimension placed
`either parallel or perpendicular to studs a maximum of
`16 inches (406 mm) on center.
`All installations of SmartLap siding must be backed by a
`weather-resistive barrier as required by the UBC. Openings
`in, penetrations
`through, and
`terminations of
`the
`SmartSystem sidings are outside the scope of this report
`and must be specifically approved by the building official in
`accordance with the UBC.
`SmartLap siding joints must be staggered over successive
`courses. For installation without nailable sheathing, lap
`siding joints must occur over stud locations.
`SmartLap siding must be attached with top nailing in
`which the nails are installed in the following manner:
`• SmartLap Siding: Nails must be placed at the top of the
`lap siding panel, 3/4 inch (19.1 mm) down from the upper
`edge. Each successive course of lap siding must overlap
`a minimum of 1 inch (25.4 mm).
`• Self-aligning SmartLap Siding: Nails must be placed at the
`top of the SmartLap siding panel, 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) down
`from the upper edge. Each successive course of lap
`siding must rest on the back rabbet and must self-align at
`an overlap of 13/16 inch (20.64 mm).
`Fasteners must be corrosion-resistant. Nails attaching lap
`siding must be 8d box nails. Nails must penetrate the solid
`wood framing a minimum of 11/2 inches (38 mm). Nails
`attaching the SmartLap siding to nailable sheathing must be
`spaced at 8 inches (203 mm) on center, maximum, along
`the top edge of the siding and must also penetrate the
`sheathing and framing at each stud location a minimum of
`11/2 inches (38 mm).
`Installation of SmartLap siding on studs spaced 24 inches
`(610 mm) on center is limited to maximum building heights
`of 40 feet (12 192 mm) in Exposure C locations where the
`basic wind speed does not exceed 110 mph (177 km/h).
`Where the wind speed exceeds 90 mph (145 km/h), siding
`greater than 6 inches (152 mm) in width installed on studs
`24 inches (610 mm) on center, or siding greater than 8
`inches (203 mm) installed on studs 16 inches (406 mm) on
`center, must be
`fastened by either
`top nailing or
`conventional nailing, using two nails per stud for each piece
`of siding for a distance within 10 percent of the width of the
`narrow side of the building from the wall corners.
`2.6.3 SmartPanel Siding: SmartPanel siding is 4 feet
`(1219 mm) wide and 4 feet to 18 feet (1219 mm to 5486
`mm) in length. SmartPanel Siding is available in 3/8-inch,
`7/16-inch and 19/32-inch (9.5 mm, 11.1 mm and 15.1 mm)
`thicknesses. The 3/8- and 7/16-inch-thick (9.5 and 15.1 mm)
`panels have a minimum groove thickness of 0.240 inch (6.1
`mm) and a minimum shiplap thickness of 0.188 inch (4.8
`mm). The 19/32-inch-thick (15.1 mm) panels have a minimum
`groove thickness of 0.320 inch (8.1 mm) and a minimum
`shiplap thickness of 0.212 inch (5.4 mm).
`SmartPanels must be installed either directly to framing
`members or over one of the following nailable sheathings:
`1. Nominal 1-inch-thick (25.4 mm) boards with studs a
`maximum of 24 inches (406 or 610 mm) on center.
`2. Sheathing panels with a roof span rating of 24 inches
`(610 mm) or greater, with the long dimension placed
`either parallel or perpendicular to studs a maximum of
`24 inches (406 or 610 mm) on center.

`3. Sheathing panels with a roof span rating of less than
`24 inches (610 mm), with the long dimension placed
`either parallel or perpendicular to studs a maximum of
`16 inches (406 mm) on center.
`SmartPanel siding must be installed with its long
`dimension oriented vertically. The 7/16-inch-thick (11.1 mm)
`panel siding must be fastened to framing members with 6d
`box nails. The 19/32-inch-thick (15.1 mm) panel siding must
`be fastened to framing members with 8d box nails. Nails
`must penetrate wood framing a minimum of 11/2 inches (38
`mm). Fasteners must be corrosion-resistant. When
`SmartPanel siding is applied directly to the framing, the
`maximum spacing of the framing must be consistent with
`the span rating of the SmartPanel siding, which is indicated
`on the panel’s label.
`SmartPanel siding installed either directly to framing or
`over nailable sheathing, with the nails spaced 6 inches (152
`mm) on center 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) in from panel edges and 12
`inches (305 mm) on center at intermediate supports spaced
`16 inches (406 mm) on center, is limited to maximum
`building heights of 40 feet (12 192 mm), in Exposure C
`locations, where the basic wind speed does not exceed 90
`mph (141 km/h). Where the basic wind speed exceeds 90
`mph (141 km/h) but does not exceed 110 mph (177 km/h),
`and studs are spaced 24 inches (610 mm) on center, the
`panel siding must be attached to intermediate supports with
`the nails spaced a maximum of 6 inches (152 mm) on
`center.
`(1219 mm by 2438 mm)
`Four-foot-by-eight-foot
`SmartPanel siding installed vertically, directly to framing,
`with a single row of nails penetrating both laps [nails spaced
`6 inches (152 mm) on center at panel edges and 12 inches
`(305 mm) on center at intermediate supports], is an
`alternative to the wall bracing requirements for conventional
`wood
`frame construction specified
`in
`the UBC
`for
`applications not requiring structural analysis. Minimum
`coverage area must be as set forth in the UBC for structural
`wood panels. The nails required for 7/16-inch-thick (11.1 mm)
`panels are 6d box nails. Nails used to attach 19/32-inch-thick
`(15.1 mm) panels are 8d box nails. Shear values for panels
`applied directly to studs must be no greater than those
`noted in Table 4.
`All SmartPanel joints must occur at framing members and
`must be protected with a continuous wood batt, approved
`caulking, flashing, or vertical or horizontal shiplap; or
`otherwise must be made waterproof.
`When the SmartPanel siding is installed over an approved
`foam plastic sheathing up to 1 inch (25.4 mm) in thickness,
`the siding must be fastened with galvanized box nails of
`sufficient size to provide 11/2-inch (38 mm) penetration into
`the framing.

`For SI: 1 inch = 25.4 mm, 1 psf = 0.0479 kN/m2.
`1The allowable spans were determined using a dead load of 10 psf. If the dead load exceeds 10 psf, then the live load must be reduced accordingly.
`2Tongue-and-groove edges, panel edge clips (one between each support, except two between supports 48 inches on center), lumber blocking, or other. Only lumber block-
`ing will satisfy blocked diaphragm requirements of Table 1.
`324 inches for 1/2-inch panels.
`4Is permitted over framing spaced 24 inches on center where 3/4-inch wood strip flooring is installed at right angles to joist.
`5Is permitted over framing spaced 24 inches on center for floors where 11/2 inches of cellular or lightweight concrete is applied over the panels.

`For SI: 1 inch = 25.4 mm, 1 lb./ft. = 14.6 N/m.
`1For framing of other species: (a) Find specific gravity for species of lumber in AF&PA National Design Specification; (b) find shear value from table for nail size, and
`for Structural 1 panels (regardless of actual grade); (c) multiply value by 0.82 for species with specific gravity greater than or equal to 0.42 but less than 0.49, or 0.65
`for species with specific gravity less than 0.42
`2All panel edges backed with 2-inch nominal or wider framing. Panels must be installed with their long dimension oriented in the vertical direction, except that it is per-
`mitted to orient the long dimension of sheathing panels in the horizontal direction. Space nails 6 inches o.c. along intermediate framing members for 3/8-inch and
`7/16-inch panels installed on studs spaced 24 inches o.c. For other conditions and panel thicknesses, space nails 12 inches o.c. on intermediate supports.
`3The values are for short-time loads due to wind or earthquake and must be reduced by 25 percent for normal loading.
`4Framing at panel edges must be 3 inches nominal or wider and nails must be staggered where nails are spaced 2 inches o.c., and where 10d nails having penetration into
`framing of more than 15/8 inches are spaced 3 inches o.c. Exception: Unless otherwise required, 2-inch nominal framing must be used where full nailing surface is
`available and nails are staggered.
`5Shear values must be increased to values shown for 15/32-inch sheathing with same nailing, provided (1) studs are spaced a maximum of 16 inches o.c., or (2) panels
`are applied with long dimension across studs.
`6Panel thickness at point of nailing at panel edges determines applicable shear values, except 7/16-inch- and 19/32-inch-thick panel sidings nailed at shiplap edge use 3/8
`inch shear values.
`7Shiplap edges must be double nailed: one nail must be placed in the underlap and a second nail must be placed in the overlap at the nail spacing specified for the applicable
`shear value.
