`boot sector
`
`bomb n. An abrupt and Complete failure, especially of a running
`program.
`1/. To fail suddenly and completely. See also crash.
`
`bookmark A marker used in a program such as a web browser or a
`help utility that allows you to go directly to a specific webpage.
`
`Boolean expression An expression that yields a value of TRUE or
`FALSE. Boolean expressions can contain relational operators such
`
`as = for is equal to, < for is less than, and > for is greater than. For ex-
`
`ample, the statement 26 > 30 returns the value FALSE. The other
`main type of operator in Boolean expressions is a Boolean (some-
`times called logical) operator, such as AND, OR, NOT, NOR, or XOR.
`
`For example, if A is the statement Ice is cold (and we assume that the
`statement is true), the result of the expression NOT A is FALSE.
`
`Boolean logic A form of algebra that employs only two values, TRUE
`and FALSE. Boolean logic, developed by the 19th-century English
`mathematician George Boole, is particularly well suited for use with
`computers because it works so well with the binary number system.
`A bit with value 1 corresponds to TRUE; 0 bit with value 0 corre—
`
`sponds to FALSE. See also fuzzy logic,
`Boolean Operator An operator whose result can only be one of two
`values, TRUE or FALSE. Boolean operators are widely used in pro-
`gramming, spreadsheets, and databases. Common Boolean opera-
`tors are AND, OR, XOR, and NOT. For example, the database query
`
`find all where last_name = "Iones" AND balance_owed > 100
`
`would yield the records of everyone named Iones who owed more
`than $100. The query
`
`find all where last_name = "Jones” OR balance_owed > 100
`
`would yield the records of everyone named lanes regardless of the
`balance owed and the records of everyone who owed more than
`$100 regardless of last name. Also called logical operator.
`boot
`v. To load the software, usually the operating system, that starts
`
`the computer.
`1'1. The process of loading the software that starts the computer. See
`also cold boot, warm boot.
`
`boot disk See startup disk.
`boot sector A track on a disk containing the instructions that auto-
`matically run to begin the operation of the computer when the com-
`puter is turned on. Usually the boot sector is located on a hard
`drive’s first track in the first partition.
