`
`V.
`
`Identification of Challenge and Relief Requested
`
`Identification of Prior Art
`
`A.
`The following references are pertinent to the grounds of unpatentability
`
`explained below:1
`
`1. U.S. Patent No. 6,345,330 (“Chu330” (Ex-1003)), which issued on
`
`February 5, 2002, is prior art under 35 U.S.C. § 102(b).2
`
`
`1 As discussed in greater detail below, the challenged claims are not entitled to a
`
`priority date earlier than April 15, 2011.
`
`2 Because the ʼ750 Patent is, at best, entitled to a priority date of April 15, 2011 (as
`
`explained more fully below), the pre-AIA (America Invents Act) statutory
`
`framework applies.

`
`Statutory Grounds of Unpatentability
`
`B.
`Petitioner requests IPR and cancellation of claims 14-17, 29-30, and 42-43 of
`
`the ’750 Patent under 35 U.S.C. § 103. This Petition demonstrates that there is a
`
`reasonable likelihood that Petitioner will prevail with respect to cancellation of at
`
`least one challenged claim. See 35 U.S.C. § 314(a).
`
`VI. Overview of the ’750 Patent
`The ’750 Patent describes a computer system that includes an attached
`
`computer module (“ACM”) and a peripheral console (“PCON”). Ex-1001, Figures
`
`1, 7.

`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`The ACM can be inserted into the PCON. Ex-1001, 7:1-8, 10:3-6. The ACM
`
`includes components, such as the CPU, the Northbridge, and a Host Interface
`
`Controller (HIC). The HIC in the ACM connects to a Peripheral Interface
`
`Controller (PIC) in the PCON. The PCON can further include additional

`
`
`components, such as a “PCI Device1” and “PCI Add-on Board 2,” that are connected
`
`
`
`to the PIC via a “South Bridge” and a Secondary PCI Bus.
`
`Figures 18 and 21 show additional details regarding the ACM and the PCON.
`
`As with Figure 7, Figures 18 and 21 show that the ACM and the PCON are
`
`connected by the HIC and PIC. Again, as with Figure 7, Figure 18 shows the HIC
`
`is connected to a component labeled “North Bridge 1746,” and Figure 21 shows
`
`that the PIC is connected to a component labeled “South Bridge 1846.”
`
`Specifically, the ’750 Patent refers to the North Bridge 1746 as a “CPU Bridge
`
`1746” and the South Bridge 1846 as a “Peripheral Bridge 1846.”3 See Ex-1001,
`
`27:12-23, 27:50-52, 28:24-26, 28:48-50, 29:1-9, 31:47-50, 33:62-34:2, 34:6-10,
`
`34:32-34, 35:55-57.
`
`
`3 The only component referenced as a “peripheral bridge” in the entirety of the
`
`
`
`
`
`’750 Patent is a Southbridge.

`
`Communications Interface Between ACM and PCON
`
`
`
`
`
`The HIC in the ACM and the PIC in the PCON form a communication
`
`interface. Specifically, as shown in Figure 6, “[t]he ACM 605 and the peripheral
`
`console 610 are interfaced through an exchange interface system (XIS) bus 615”
`
`which “includes power bus 616, video bus 617 and peripheral bus (XPBus) 618.”
`
`Ex-1001, 15:62-66.

`

`
`Petition for Inter Partes Review
`U.S. Patent No. 9,703,750 (claims 14-17, 29-30, and 42-43)
`
`
`
` “Video bus 617 transmits video signals between the ACM 605 and the
`
`
`
`peripheral console 610 … such as … Transition Minimized Differential Signaling
`
`(TMDS) signals for flat panel displays.” Ex-1001, 16:3-9.
`
`Local PCI bus transactions are encoded for transmission over the XPBus. See,
`
`e.g., Ex-1001, 17:60-62 (“Encoders … format the PCI address/data bits to a form
`
`more suitable for parallel to serial conversion prior to transmittal on the XPBus.”).
`
`The XPBus includes two sets of unidirectional lines, such as PCK and PD0-PD3
`
`and PCKR and PDR0-PDR3. See Ex-1001, 24:31-39. The ’750 Patent explains
`
`that “although each of the lines PCK, PD0 to PD3, …, PCKR, PDR0 to PDR3 …
`
`is referred to as a line, in the singular rather than plural, each such line may contain
`
`more than one physical line.” Ex-1001, 24:51-54.
`
`The first set of unidirectional lines PCK, PD0 to PD3 with differential signal
`
`pairs is illustrated in Figure 31. Ex-1001, 24:26-30 (“These lines are unidirectional
`
`LVDS lines for transmitting signals from HIC 2900 to PIC 3000.”); see also id.,
`
`22:41-46.

`
`
`
`
`The second “set of lines, namely PCKR and PDR0 to PDR3 [not shown in
`
`Figure 31] are used to transmit clock signals and bits from PIC 3000 to HIC 2900.”
`
`Ex-1001, 24:28-50, 22:46-52.
`
`The ’750 Patent further describes different embodiments. For example,
`
`Figure 8 of the ’750 Patent shows the HIC being integrated with the Northbridge
`
`in the ACM and the PIC being integrated with the Southbridge in the PCON. In
`
`this embodiment, and in comparison with Figure 7, the “North Bridge’s Primary PCI
`
`Bus” would presumably be integrated between the Northbridge and the HIC such
`
`that there is a direct connection to the CPU via the Host Bus.

`

`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`In Figure 8A, and without much explanation, the Southbridge is brought into
`
`the ACM from the PCON, and integrated with the HIC, whereas the Northbridge
`
`is now integrated with the CPU. See Ex-1001, 16:24-26 (“FIG. 8A shows an
`
`attached computer module with integrated CPU/NB/Graphics 815 and Integrated
`
`HIC/SB820.”). In this embodiment, and in comparison with Figure 7, the coupling
`
`between components 815 and 820 is labeled as a “Video Port” and “Peripheral Bus.”
`
`However, details about this Video Port or this Peripheral Bus are not provided in the
`
`’750 Patent in the context of Fig. 8A.

`VII. Level of Ordinary Skill in the Art
`A person of ordinary skill in the art (“POSITA”) as of the priority date of the
`
`challenged claims of the ’750 Patent would have had a Bachelor of Science or
`
`equivalent degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering and two years of
`
`graduate work, work experience, or the equivalent in computer systems, interfaces,
`
`and architecture. Additional education could make up for less practical experience,
