`
`YOUR CORONARYARTERIES
`
`The heart receives its own suppy of b ood from the coronary arteries. Two major coronary arteries branchoff from the aorta
`
`near the point where the aorta and the eft ventric e meet. These arteries and their branches supp ya_ parts of the heart
`musc e with b ood.

`Right margina artery
`
`Posterior descending artery
`
`The right coronary artery supplies:
`
`right atrium
`
`right ventric e
`
`bottom portion of both ventric es and back of the septum
`
`The main portion of the right coronary artery provides b ood to the right side of the heart, which pumps b ood to the ungs.
`
`The rest of the right coronary artery and its main branch, the posterior descending artery, together with the branches of the
`
`circum(cid:216)ex artery, run across the surface of the heart s underside, supp ying the bottom portion of the eft ventric e and back
`
`of the septum.
`
`What is collateral circulation?
`
`Co atera circu ation is a network of tiny b ood vesse s, and, under norma conditions, not open. When the coronary arteries
`
`narrow to the point that b ood (cid:216)ow to the heart musc e is imited (coronary artery disease), co atera vesse s may en arge and
`
`become active. This a ows b ood to (cid:216)ow around the b ocked artery to another artery nearby or to the same artery past the
`
`b ockage, protecting the heart tissue from injury.
`
`Collateral vessels surround blocked blood vessel
