`
`Dear Steve:
`
`Thanks for agreeing to help me with the synthesized samples prepared by Dr. Bihovsky,
`
`which I have asked to be sent to you directly and should arrive on 1/4/22. When running the
`tests, please do all of the work yourself and do not allow anyone else to handle them. Also,
`please use the following protocol when receiving and running the samples:
`
`
`1. Please record all steps in the bound notebook included with this letter and sign and date
`each page;
`2. The samples will likely be shipped in a cold box. When it arrives, please save the
`shipping label and paste it into the notebook. Store the samples in your refrigerator until
`you are ready to run the XRD scans;
`3. Allow the unopened vials to sit at room temperature for 1 hour before testing begins;
`4. Run the NIST Corundum sample SRM1976x to verify the instrument calibration over the
`range of 20° - 100°. Please record the test conditions and file name in the notebook.
`5. When ready to run the test samples, do not grind the powder and use a zero background
`holder;
`6. Run the scans with the following parameters:
`a. 45 KV/40 mA
`b. 2° - 40° with step size of 0.0131° (approx.)
`c. DS = 1/4°, ASS = 1/2°, SS = 0.04 Rad, RS = 0.1mm; Ni filter
`d. Rotate at 4 s/rev
`e. Use a counting time sufficient to obtain an intensity of at least 50,000 counts on
`the strongest peak at 15° - 16°
`f. Record the file names for each run in the notebook.
`7. When the scans are complete, please return the signed notebook, samples and all of the
`data files (even the calibration check) via e-mail to me.
