`APPELLEE’S MOTION FOR EXTENSION
`OF TIME TO FILE APPELLEE’S RESPONSE BRIEF
`

`NOW COME Appellees, by and through their attorney Kelli M. Childress, El
`Paso County Public Defender, and request that this Honorable Court grant an
`extension of the deadline by which to file their brief in this appeal, and in support
`thereof, state as follows:
`1. Appellees’ brief is due June 27 , 2025, and Appellees request an
`

`extension for one week until July 4, 2025.
`2. The undersigned counsel is the Chief Public Defender for El Paso
`County and is responsible for all aspects of the administration of the
`Public Defender’s Office, with approximately 100 employees handling
`approximately 10,000 cases.
`3. Undersigned counsel, who is originally from the State of Illinois, had
`previously scheduled a visit from her niece from Chicago from June 8
`through June 16, 2024, with time off work.
`4. Undersigned counsel had been previously scheduled to attend a
`statewide criminal defense conference from June 17 through June 21,
`2024, followed immediately by a vacation from June 21 through June
`24, 2024.
`5. In spite of the other commitments, undersigned counsel has spent in
`excess of 170 hours working on the very complicated response to the
`State’s amended brief in these matters. As of this request, the brief is
`74 pages in length, with 16,553 words, and is still missing some case
`law analysis.
`6. Undersigned counsel will need to complete the draft and narrow the
`arguments in order to fully and fairly brief the issues, which can be
`

`completed in less than seven days.
` WHEREFORE, Appellees pray that the Court grant this motion and extend
`the deadline for filing Appellees’ response brief to July 4, 2025.
