`PCT/US2007/086985
`
`1.
`
`A method, comprising:
`
`a. using a first immunoassay to detect whether a particular gram positive
`
`bacteria is present in a sample from a gram positive blood culture; and
`
`b. using a second immunoassay to detect the presence of a marker for antibiotic
`
`resistance.
`
`2.
`
`The method of claim 1, wherein the gram positive bacteria is a Staphylococcus
`
`species.
`
`3.
`
`The method of claim 1, wherein the first immunoassay detects an enzyme
`
`4.
`
`5.
`
`6.
`
`7.
`
`present on a particular species of gram positive bacteria.
`
`The method of claim 3, wherein the enzyme is coagulase.
`
`The method of claim 1, wherein the marker for antibiotic resistance is a
`
`penicillin binding protein.
`
`Thc mcthod of claim 1, whcrcin thc particular antibiotic is mcthicillin.
`
`The method of claim 1, which fiirther comprises prior to step a, the step of
`
`obtaining a sample from a gram positive blood culture.
`
`8.
`
`A method, comprising:
`
`a. detecting, using a first immunoassay, whether Staphylococcus aureus or
`
`another species of Staphylococcus is present in a sample from a gram
`
`positive blood culture; and
`
`b. determining, in the sample from the gram positive blood culture via a second
`
`immunoasssay, whether the detected species of Staphylococcus is methicillin
`
`resistant.
`
`9.
`
`The method of claim 8, which further comprises prior to step a, the step of
`
`obtaining a sample from a gram positive blood culture.
