`
`Executive Overview
`
`Executive Overview
`
`Many companies may have found the initial impact of introducing EDI into their business systems
`to be complex—increases in staff, time, and paper. The opportlmities for more accurate
`information, faster turnaround, and reduction in errors are still there. You simply need a way to
`manage the process.
`
`Gentran:Viewpoint not only addresses these challenges, but also provides the tools necessary to
`fully exploit the opportunities.
`
`Viewpoint is an advanced set of tools that will help you automate the monitoring, control, and
`management of your EDI environment. Specifically, it allows you to more efficiently manage your
`day-to-day EDI operations and continuously increase your number of trading partners, messages,
`and applications. Improved access to critical information can enhance customer service and
`internal communications.
`
`The primary objective of Gentran:Viewpoint is to make the right information, about events which
`have occurred in EDI business operations, available to the right people at the right time.
`Gentran:Viewpoint accomplishes this objective with two major capabilities:
`
`-
`
`-
`
`Exception Management
`
`Tracking Management
`
`Exception Management is a part of the base Gentran:V1ewpoint product. It allows you to capture
`exception information, notify the appropriate users, and optionally take automated action for
`exceptions that are specific to their EDI business needs. An example of Exception Management is
`to capture outbound invoice errors, make the information available online for the appropriate
`payables people, and automatically send an e-mail to inform them that the exception has occurred.
`
`Tracking Management is an optional module for Gentran:V1ewpoint that allows you to query the
`status and history of a document as it moves through the entire end—to—end EDI environment. The
`user has the ability to query based on identifiers that they know and understand. An example of
`Tracking Management is a customer calling to inquire about their purchase order. Using the PO
`Number, the service person can determine online that the document was received but has failed
`compliance checking, and that the rejected acknowledgement was sent out to the customer.
`
`The context of Gentran:Viewpoint within your environment is illustrated in Figure 1.1. Any
`System/Process (Tracking Point) that has been set up to communicate with the Viewpoint system
`can pass information to be monitored by Gentran:Viewpoint. The Exception Management
`capabilities focus on Gentran processes that are a part of the “Translation” box and Connect
`processes that are a part of the “Communications” box for Gentran:Plus installations. Also, the
`Network Reconciliation and Acknowledgment Reconciliation provide information from the
`“Networks” and “Trading Partners” boxes. With Tracking Management, you are able to track
`items in the “Business Applications” and “Communications" boxes by using User Gateways into
`Viewpoint.
