`
`Identification of Prior Art
`
`A.
`The following references are pertinent to the grounds of unpatentability
`
`explained below:1
`
`1.
`
`U.S. Patent No. 6,345,330 (“Chu330” (Ex-1003)), which issued on
`
`February 5, 2002, is prior art under 35 U.S.C. § 102(b).2
`
`
`1 As discussed in greater detail below, the challenged claims are not entitled to a
`
`priority date earlier than April 15, 2011.
`
`2 Because the ʼ768 Patent claims priority to a patent that was filed before March 16,
`
`2013, the pre-AIA (America Invents Act) statutory framework applies.

`
`Statutory Grounds of Unpatentability
`
`B.
`Petitioner requests cancellation of claims 4-6 and 10-12 of the ’768 Patent
`
`under 35 U.S.C. § 103. This Petition demonstrates that there is a reasonable
`
`likelihood that Petitioner will prevail with respect to cancellation of at least one
`
`challenged claim. See 35 U.S.C. § 314(a).
`
`VI. Overview of the ’768 Patent
`The ’768 Patent describes a computer system that includes an attached
`
`computer module (“ACM”) and a peripheral console (“PCON”). Ex-1001, Figure
`
`1.

`
`
`
`
`
`
`The ACM is a removable module that can be inserted into the PCON. Ex-
`
`1001, 7:4-5 (“the ACM inserts into a Computer Module Bay (CMB) within a
`
`peripheral console.”), 10:4-6 (“has a peripheral console that has two or more
`
`computer bays that can receive a removable computer module or ACM.”). A more
`
`detailed view of the ACM and the PCON is shown below in Figure 7 of the ’768
`
`Patent.

`
`
`
`
`
`As shown in Figure 7, the ACM includes components, such as the CPU, the
`
`North Bridge, and a Host Interface Controller (HIC). The HIC in the ACM
`
`connects to a Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC) in the PCON. The PCON
`
`can further include additional components, such as a “PCI Device1” and “PCI Add-

`
`on Board 2,” that are connected to the PIC via a “South Bridge” and a Secondary
`
`
`
`PCI Bus.
`
`Figures 18 and 21 show additional details regarding the ACM and the PCON.
`
`As with Figure 7, Figures 18 and 21 show that the ACM and the PCON are
`
`connected together by the HIC and PIC. Again, as with Figure 7, Figure 18 shows
`
`the HIC is connected to a component labeled “North Bridge 1746,” and Figure 21
`
`shows that the PIC is connected to a component labeled “South Bridge 1846.”
`
`Specifically, the ’768 Patent refers to the North Bridge 1746 as a “CPU Bridge
`
`1746” and the South Bridge 1846 as a “Peripheral Bridge 1846.”3 See Ex-1001,
`
`27:11-23, 27:52-54, 28:27-29, 28:51-53, 29:4-12, 31:50-53, 33:65-34:5, 34:9-13,
`
`34:34-37, 35:58-60.
`
`
`3 The only component that is referred to as a “peripheral bridge” in the entirety of
`
`
`
`
`
`the ’768 Patent is a South Bridge.

`
`Communications Interface Between ACM and Peripheral Console
`
`The HIC in the ACM and the PIC in the PCON form a communication
`
`interface. Specifically, as shown in Figure 6, “[t]he ACM 605 and the peripheral
`
`console 610 are interfaced through an exchange interface system (XIS) bus 615”
`
`which “includes power bus 616, video bus 617 and peripheral bus (XPBus) 618.”

`console 610.” Ex-1001, 16:3-4.
`
`“Video bus 617 transmits video signals between the ACM 605 and the
`
`peripheral console 610 … such as Video Electronics Standards Association
`
`(VESA) Plug and Display’s Transition Minimized Differential Signaling (TMDS)
`
`signals for flat panel displays.” Ex-1001, 16:6-13.

`
`
`Local PCI bus transactions are encoded for transmission over the XPBus. See,
`
`
`
`e.g., Ex-1001, 17:62-64 (“Encoders … format the PCI address/data bits to a form
`
`more suitable for parallel to serial conversion prior to transmittal on the XPBus.”).
`
`To transmit encoded PCI bus transactions, the ’768 Patent describes detailed
`
`connections made between the HIC in the ACM and the PIC in the PCON. See Ex-
`
`1001, 15:65-16:2, 16:13-16. Figure 29 of the ’768 Patent illustrates the HIC in the
`
`ACM. The HIC is located between a host PCI bus and an XPBus (which is coupled
`
`to the PCON, not shown). Ex-1001, 17:29-18:5, 23:16-17 (“HIC 2900 shown in
`
`FIG. 29 is, other than for a few differences, identical to HIC 1000 shown in FIG.
`
`10.”).

`
`
`
`
`When the HIC receives from the host PCI bus “PCI address/data” (“PCI
`
`AD”), the HIC queues the PCI AD at the “first in first out (FIFO) buffers” and

`
`subsequently encodes the PCI AD into a format “more suitable for parallel to serial
`
`
`
`conversion prior to transmittal on the XPBus.” Ex-1001, 17:63-64. The HIC at the
`
`“parallel to serial converters 1032” then serializes the encoded, “multiplexed
`
`parallel A/D bits” into data packets and transmits them “on data lines PD0 to PD3
`
`of the XPBus.” Id., 18:63-67. In addition, other signals, such as clock signals
`
`generated by a PLL clock, are sent over other lines (e.g., PCK of the XPBus). See
`
`id., 18:53-62. The HIC operates in reverse when it receives data and signals—from
`
`lines PCKR and PDR0 to PDR3 of the XPBus—to be sent to the host PCI bus.
`
`See Ex-1001, 19:18-32; 20:10-19.
`
`The XPBus itself includes two sets of unidirectional lines, such as PCK and
`
`PD0-PD3 and PCKR and PDR0-PDR3. See Ex-1001, 24:33-41. The ’768 Patent
`
`explains that “although each of the lines PCK, PD0 to PD3, …, PCKR, PDR0 to
`
`PDR3 … is referred to as a line, in the singular rather than plural, each such line
`
`may contain more than one physical line.” Ex-1001, 24:53-56. Specifically, “[t]he
`
`term line, when not directly preceded by the terms physical or conductive, is herein
`
`used interchangeably with a signal or bit channel … of one or more physical lines
`
`for transmitting a signal.” Ex-1001, 24:59-63.
`
`The first set of unidirectional lines PCK, PD0 to PD3 is illustrated in Figure
`
`31 of the ’768 Patent, shown below with differential signal pairs for each. Ex-1001,
